a few things to check
Good view of the sky
Well charged battery preferably on AC charger before using
Low battery power will affect connection.
Burned out SIIRF chip ( big money to have repaired!)
usually caused by plugging GPS into car DC power and then starting engine. Not recommended!

I had one like that last year, I found if I lied to it when it asked what state I was in, then it would find the satellites and work fine ... until the next time you turned it on. That one was fixed by installing new v7.2 firmware using Garmin WebUpdater through the USB port.
I've got one right now that won't find the satellites and the firmware trick didn't work. That's all I've got so far. Tom.
