Problem for Dell 942 All-In-One InkJet Printer
Im trying to install an old printer on a new vista comp w/o disks

my mother just bought a BRAND SPANKIN NEW comp with windows vista and im trying to get the old printer to work on it. i downloaded a driver from dell.com, that didn't work, i found out i need a VISTA specific driver and tried that and that didn't work. im to the point where the comp thinks its doing everything right but the printer is ignoring documents i send to it to print. anyway i think i need to start at the beginning and would like some expert help. my comp is a dell studio 540 (this might be what you call operating system i don't know) (dell) WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM OEMAct, and my printer is a dell printer 942 all-in-one http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=17LNJ61&SystemID=PRN_ALL_A942&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Windows Vista" is your operating system.
I would start by uninstalling (undoing) any of the printer software that you have installed, and try again. It sounds like at this point that you may have bits and pieces of both 'XP' and 'Vista' drivers installed.
Your link is pointing to the right page at Dell, just select the "driver" under the windows Vista tab.
I'm not sure how that software will be packaged, But I assume that it is self installing once you download it. You just click on it to start the installation. Usually you will leave you USB cable to the printer unplugged until after the installation, and then you are prompted to plug it in.
I'm not sure if this will help, but it's difficult to know exactly what you have done to this point.
