5.2L and 5.9L Engines
It is necessary to remove the oil pan, and to remove the oil pump from the rear main bearing cap to service the oil pump.
  1. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil pan.
  2. Remove the oil pump mounting bolts and remove the oil pump from the rear main bearing cap.

To install:
  1. Install the pump and tighten the cover bolts to 95 inch lbs. (11 Nm).
  2. Prime the oil pump before installation by filling the rotor cavity with engine oil. Install the oil pump on the engine and tighten attaching bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm).
  3. Install the oil pan.
  4. Fill the engine with the proper grade motor oil. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Water pump removal


Water Pump REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old. 1.8L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the timing belt.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the engine oil dipstick tube bracket bolt(s) from the water pump.
  6. Remove the two bolts and the gasket from the water inlet pipe.
  7. Remove all but the uppermost water pump mounting bolt.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Remove the remaining bolts and the water pump assembly.
  10. If the water pump is being reused, remove all gasket material from the water pump.

    To install:
  12. Install a new gasket onto the water pump.
  13. Place the water pump into its mounting position, then install the uppermost bolt.
  14. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  15. Install the remaining water pump mounting bolts and tighten all bolts to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  16. Install a new gasket onto the water inlet pipe.
  17. Install the two bolts from the water inlet pipe to the water pump and tighten to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-25 Nm).
  18. Install the bolt to the engine oil dipstick tube bracket.
  19. Lower the vehicle.
  20. Install the timing belt.
  21. Fill the cooling system.
  22. Connect the negative battery cable.
  23. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Check for coolant leaks.
  24. Check the coolant level and add coolant, as necessary.
1.9L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove the timing belt cover and the timing belt.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
  6. Remove the heater hose from the water pump.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Support the engine with a suitable hydraulic floor jack.
  9. Remove the right engine mount attaching bolts and roll the engine mount aside.
  10. Remove the water pump attaching bolts.
  11. Using the floor jack, raise the engine enough to provide clearance for removing the water pump.

    To install:
  13. Make sure the mating surfaces of the cylinder block and water pump are clean and free of gasket material.
  14. If the water pump is to be replaced, transfer the timing belt tensioner components to the new water pump.
  15. With the engine supported and raised with a suitable floor jack, place the water pump and the gasket on the cylinder block and install the four attaching bolts. Tighten the bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  16. Install the timing belt and cover.
  17. Roll the engine mount into position and install the mount bolts. Remove the floor jack.
  18. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  19. Connect the heater hose to the pump.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22. Refill the cooling system.
  23. Start the engine, allow it to reach normal operating temperature and check for coolant leaks.
  24. Check the coolant level and add as necessary.

How to replace the water pump


Water Pump
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
CAUTION

2S-ELC Engines

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the timing belt as described in this section.
  3. Remove the alternator adjusting bar.
  4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet housing.

  5. Disconnect the water temperature switch from the water inlet housing.
  6. Disconnect the water by-pass hose from the water pump.
  7. Remove the two heater pipe clamp bolt. Remove the two nuts and heater pipe
    with gasket. Replace the gasket.
  8. Loosen the three water pump mounting bolts in the indicated sequence.

  9. Remove the water pump and O-ring. If the water pump is stubborn, tap it a
    few times with a rubber mallet.
  10. Installation is the reverse of removal. Make sure all the water pump and
    engine contact surfaces are clean and install the new O-ring into the pump cover
    groove.
  11. Install the water pump with the three bolts. Tighten the bolts in sequence
    to 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  12. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with a good brand of ethylene
    glycol based coolant. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.

3S-FE Engines

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Disconnect the water temperature switch connector from the water inlet
    housing.
  3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet housing.
  4. Remove the timing belt and timing belt pulleys as described in this section.

  5. Remove the two nuts attaching the water by-pass pipe to the water pump
    cover.
  6. Remove the three water pump-to-engine attaching bolts.
  7. Pull the water pump and the water pump cover out from the engine.
  8. Remove the two O-rings and gasket. Discard them and replace with new.
  9. Installation is the reverse of removal. Secure the water pump onto the
    engine and install the three bolts. Tighten the bolts in an alternate pattern to
    82 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Install the by-pass pipe attaching nuts and tighten them to
    82 inch lbs. (9 Nm) also.
  10. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with coolant.
  11. Start the engine and check for leaks.

5S-FE Engine

  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the timing belt.
  3. Remove the No. 1 idler pulley and tension spring. Remove the No. 2 idler
    pulley.
  4. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the water inlet.
  5. Remove the alternator belt adjusting bar.
  6. Loosen the two nuts and disconnect the water by-pass pipe.
  7. Remove the three pump mounting bolts in sequence (middle, top, bottom) and
    then pull out the water pump and cover. Remove the gasket and two O-rings.

    To install:

  8. Replace the two O-rings and gasket with new ones, coat the by-pass O-ring
    with soapy water and then connect the pump cover to the by-pass pipe. Do not
    install the nuts yet!
  9. With the pump loosely connected to the pipe, install the pump and tighten
    the three bolts to 82 inch lbs. (9 Nm), in sequence (top, bottom, middle).
    Install the two by-pass pipe nuts and tighten them to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  10. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten each
    component to specifications.

2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE Engines

  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the water inlet.
  3. Disconnect the timing belt from the water pump pulley.
  4. Remove the bolt holding the inlet pipe to the alternator belt adjusting bar
    and then remove the inlet pipe and O-ring.
  5. Remove the water inlet and thermostat.
  6. Remove the seven bolts and then pry off the water pump.
    To install:

  7. Scrape any remaining gasket material off the pump mating surface. Apply a
    0.08-0.12 inch (2-3mm) bead of sealant to the groove in the pump and then
    install the pump. Tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).

  8. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten each
    component to specifications. Connect the radiator hose and fill the engine with
    coolant.

1MZ-FE Engine

  1. Drain the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the timing belt.
  3. Mark the left and right camshaft pulleys with a touch of paint. Using a
    spanner wrench, remove the bolts to the right and left camshaft pulleys.
    Separate the pulleys from the engine. Be sure not to mix up the pulleys.
  4. Remove the No. 2 idler pulley by removing the bolt.
  5. Disconnect the three clamps and engine wire from the rear timing belt cover.

  6. Remove the six bolts holding the No. 3 timing belt cover to the engine
    block.

  7. Remove the bolts and nuts to the extract the water pump.

  8. Raise the engine slightly and remove the water pump and the gasket from the
    engine.

    To install:

  9. Check that the water pump turns smoothly. Also check the air hole for
    coolant leakage.
  10. Using a new gasket, apply liquid sealer to the gasket, water pump and engine
    block.
  11. Install the gasket and pump to the engine and install the four bolts and two
    nuts. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  12. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten each
    component to specifications.

    • Rear timing belt cover - 74 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    • No. 2 idler pulley - 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm)

  13. Fill the engine coolant. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery
    and start the engine.
  14. Top off the engine coolant and check for leaks.

Power Steering Pump Removal & Installation 3.8L Engine To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.
  3. Remove the accessory drive belt from the power steering pump pulley.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  6. Remove the hoses from the power steering pump.
  7. Remove the mounting bolts and the power steering pump from the engine.
  8. Remove the reservoir and pulley from the pump if necessary.
To Install:
Power steering pump removal/installation (3.8L engine) gm-08-38-480.gif

  1. If removed, install the power steering pump reservoir and pulley on the power steering pump.
  2. Position the power steering pump to the engine and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 25 lb ft (34 Nm).
  3. Install the pressure and return hoses to the pump.
  4. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Install the accessory drive belt.
  7. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  8. Inspect the system for leaks.
  9. Remove the drain pan from under the power steering pump area.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Place a drain pan under the power steering pump.
  2. Remove the coolant reservoir.
  3. Remove the pulley from the power steering pump.
  4. Remove the wiring harness near the power steering pump and place it out of the way.
  5. Disconnect the fluid hoses from the power steering pump.
  6. Remove the mounting bolts from the power steering pump and remove the pump.
To Install:

  1. Position the power steering pump assembly to the engine and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 25 lb ft (34 Nm).
  2. Install the wiring harness in its original position.
  3. Install the pulley on the power steering pump.
  4. Install the coolant reservoir.
  5. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  6. Inspect the system for leaks.
  7. Remove the drain pan from under the power steering pump.

  1. Follow the service procedures under Oil Pan Removal and remove the oil pan assembly.
  2. Remove the oil pump retainer bolts and remove the oil pump.

To install:
  1. Prime the oil pump with clean engine oil by filling either the inlet or outlet port with clean engine oil.
  2. Rotate the pump shaft to distribute the oil within the pump body. Install the pump and tighten the mounting bolts to 14-21 ft. lbs. on 2.0L and 2.3L engines; 6-10 ft. lbs. on 2.8L and 2.9L engines or 13-15 ft. lbs. on 4.0L engines.

Do not force the oil pump if it does not seat readily. The oil pump driveshaft may be misaligned with the distributor shaft assembly. To align, rotate the intermediate driveshaft into a new position.
  1. Install the oil pan as previously described. The oil pumps are not serviceable. If defective, they must be replaced.

REPLACE WATER PUMP


3.0L OHV Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Allow the engine to cool.
  2. Remove the radiator cap and drain the cooling system.
  3. Loosen four retaining bolts securing the water pump pulley to the water pump hub.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belts.
  5. Remove the automatic belt tensioner.
  6. Disconnect and remove the heater hose from the water pump.
  7. Remove the engine control sensor wiring from the locating stud bolt, if equipped.
  8. Remove the water pump-to-engine retaining bolts and lift the water pump and pulley up and out of the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Clean the gasket surfaces on the water pump and engine front cover. Install a new gasket on the water pump using gasket adhesive.
  2. Place the water pump in position on the engine with the pulley and four retaining bolts loosely installed on the hub.
  3. Apply pipe sealant to bolt No. 3. Refer to the accompanying illustration for bolt location.
  4. Install the bolts in the water pump housing.
  5. Tighten bolts Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm). Tighten bolts Nos. 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).
The bolts are of different lengths and must be installed in the correct locations.
  1. If equipped, attach the engine control sensor wiring to the locating stud bolt.
  2. Hand-tighten the water pump pulley retaining bolts.
  3. Install the accessory drive belts.
  4. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  5. Connect the heater hose to the water pump.
  6. Fill the cooling system. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Check for leaks and proper operation.

3.0L DOHC Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the engine cooling system.
  2. Remove the water pump drive belt.
  3. Disconnect the radiator and heater hoses from the water pump.
  4. If equipped, remove the A/C compressor-to-water pump brace.
  5. Unfasten the four nuts securing the water pump to the engine and remove the water pump.

To install:

  1. Clean the water pump to engine gasket sealing surfaces.
  2. Install the water pump using a new gasket and install the four retaining nuts. Tighten the retaining nuts to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  3. Connect the radiator and heater hoses to the water pump. Make sure the clamps are securely tightened.
  4. If equipped, install the A/C compressor-to-water pump brace. Tighten the brace bolts to 15-22 ft. lbs. (20-30 Nm).
  5. Remove the water pump drive belt.
  6. Fill the engine cooling system, then connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature, then check for coolant leaks and proper engine operation.

How to replace the water pump on a 1992 geo tracker 1.6 liter engine


Water Pump - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
During these procedures, identify all components removed from the engine so that they may be reinstalled in their original positions. If discarding the old components so that new components can be installed, identifying the old items is not necessary.


1.3L and 1.6L Engines

  1. Remove the timing belt cover, timing belt, tensioner, plate and spring.
  2. Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
  3. Remove the one (1.6L MFI engines) or two (1.3L and 1.6L TFI engines) small rubber seals from between the water pump and the oil pump, and the water pump and the cylinder head.
  4. If necessary for clearance, remove the oil level dipstick tube retaining bolt from the engine block and the alternator adjusting brace.

WARNING Do NOT use a prybar between the water pump housing and the engine block to separate the two components; this can cause scratches and/or gouges, which can prevent proper sealing.
  1. Pull the water pump off of the engine block. If the water pump is difficult to remove from the engine block, use a soft-faced mallet to tap the water pump housing until it loosens.
Do not disassemble the water pump; if the water pump is damaged or defective, the entire unit is replaced.
  1. Thoroughly clean the water pump gasket mating surfaces of old gasket material and corrosion.
To install:
  1. Along with a new gasket, install the water pump on the engine block. Tighten the water pump mounting bolts to 88-115 inch lbs. (10-13 Nm).
  2. On 1.3L and TFI 1.6L engines, install two new rubber seals: one between the water pump and oil pump, and the other between the water pump and the cylinder head. The MFI 1.6L engines only use one rubber seal, located between the water and oil pumps.
  1. If removed, install the alternator adjusting brace and the oil level dipstick retaining bolt.
  2. Install the timing belt, tensioner, plate, spring and cover.
