how do you get the evaporator out to change the element

  • maniman May 18, 2014

Are you sure its the element? These rarely fail and doubt there is an easy way to replace it even with a manual. I'd be sure to check (in this order)
The Condenser Coils are dirty and since the condenser is like a radiator and must stay clean in order to dissipate the heat which was removed from the inside of the refrigerator. As the coils get dirtier the refrigerator becomes less efficient, which makes it work harder to cool down. If the coils are dirty enough, the unit will never be cold enough and will not be able to cool the inside of the refrigerator to the proper temperature. Next is the Evaporator Fan Motor which may have failed. There may be one or two and they circulates cold air from the coils thru the compartment. If there is only one evaporator it is in the freezer side. If the fan is not working, no cold air will get to the refrigerator compartment but the freezer may still get cold. WHile poking around check to be sure nothing is caught in the condenser fan motor blade, or the condenser fan motor might be defective. The condenser fan motor draws air over the condenser coils to cool them. The condenser fan motor is located underneath the refrigerator near the back. Pull the refrigerator out from the wall and remove the access panel to access it. This next one is real common and involves the start relay which is a small device mounted to the side of the compressor. It provides power to the run winding along with the start winding for a split second at start-up to help get the compressor started. If the start relay is defective the compressor may run intermittently or not at all and the refrigerator will not get cold enough. The start relay should be replaced if defective.
Or maybe the temperature control thermostat might be defective. This allows power to flow through to the compressor, evaporator fan and condenser fan. If the cooling system fans and compressor are running, but the refrigerator or freezer is not cooling correctly check for an airflow or defrost system problem.

Finally the compressor which compresses the refrigerant and circulates the refrigerant through the evaporator and condenser coils. There are several other components which are more likely to be defective if the compressor doesn't work. If the compressor itself is defective a licensed professional will need to replace it. Unless you're sentimentally attached to the fridge this is expensive

SOURCE: Fridge warm at top cold at bottom

If the fan is no coming on inside the freezer this will need to be fixed soon. Both fans upper and lower must run while compressor runs. Inside the fresh food compartment close the damper on bottom left side next to the paned drawer. If this does not help send more cold air to the top let me know as there could be something else causing the dampers not to open and close properly.
Thanks, Sea Breeze

OK, This does not happen much on that model. This time I want you to work with me on the solution and test a couple test points on the motherboard. If you are comfortable with this let me know. It will require a voltage meter and an OHM meter. Let me know, Sea Breeze

If your defrost mechanism is not working ice buildup on evaporator will serve as insulator and keep internal temps higher than designed. Check your defrost element and/or defrost timer for proper operation.

Won,t get cold freezer side not freezing it is a ge side by side . ice is present at the back of freezer side

The problem is most likely the defrost heater element(s) and/or the defrost timer. The defrost heater element(s) are located with the evaporator core behind the access panel inside of the freezer, and can be removed, tested with an ohm meter, (any reading other than infinity would most likely mean the heater element is functional) and replaced if necessary. The defrost timer can be located inside of the refrigerator, or outside of the refrigerator behind the front kick panel, or behind the rear access cover on the back of the refrigerator.

Usually if the evaporator core is freezing up and not allowing air to flow through the evaporator core, (necessary for the system to function properly) then the defrost timer is most likely working and the defrost heater element(s) would most likely be at fault.

Always place a towel on the bottom of the freezer and use a blow dryer to defrost the evaporator core and never use any sharp or hard objects to pick away the ice or the evaporator core can be damaged and the refrigerant will be leak from the system.

I have included some images to help assist you including an image of a defrost timer that is located inside of the refrigerator, and a new defrost heater element or defrost timer can be purchased from an appliance parts distributor.

Let me know if you require any further assistance.

Freezer light is on compressor is hot freezer is not running\cooling. Interior coils have ice on them

Hello, the interior coils of the Freezer is the evaporator. If there is a uniform layer of ice on those coils or heavy buildup of frost, your defrost circuitry is not working properly. Possible timer or bi-metal defrost thermostat. Or, if it's a GE, a possible bad defrost heater element. Need to call a tech and have this serviced. The evaporator cannot absorb heat when Ice is evident. If there is ice on the lower portion of evap coils then you may have an obstruction in the sealed system. Once again, service tech can diagnose this and repair - costly. As for the freezer light being on, don't know. Make sure the door switch is working propler. Hope this helps!

GE Profile Artica PSH23PSAASV side by side refrigerator not cooling...this has happened before. The freezer stays cold but the rerigerator does not get cool. It does not seem to be getting cold enough....

You will need to unplug the refrigerator and remove the back panel inside the freezer. Check for ice or a frozen over evaporator coil. If frozen defrost and we will need to examine the defrost heater at the bottom of the evaporator. It may have a glass tube covering the heater element inside. I want you to check to see if it is burned out. The part number for the defrost heater is WR51X10042
You please let me know what you find. If the element is burned out I recommend you replace it and the defrost thermostat part number WR50X10068
You and order the parts by clicking the link below and entering the part number into the part number search feature and click FIND IT. Let me know what you find, Sea Breeze

Samsung fridge rs52530bwp the fridge side will not work

I have a similar situation before in your case if your heating element is working then you are lucky I had a samsung fridge and the defrost heating element was bad and i was forced to install a different one because i would have to change the hole evaporator in order to replace the heating element so what dit was to use a mechanical 10 hour defrost timer and install a generic heating element and a defrost thermostat on serial so it want work on less the evaporator has froze over i drill a hole to the back of the fridge and i wren the cables to the back of the fridge cover then whit foil tape an take power directly from the power cord i install the timer next to the control board so every 10 hours will give power to the heating element but will not come on unless the evaporator has froze up. on my case i had to do it like that because the heating element i use was to strong for the control board and would just burn it up. but will work even better using the original heating element. NOTE: find the diagram of a old fridge that will help you to figure out how to install the timer and the defrost thermostat no need for the timer to cut off the compressor keep in mind than the defrost thermostat only close the circuit when is chill below freezing so i recommend to use a new one I hope this help you

Fridge not cooling and Ice build up in freezer

It sounds like that when you noticed the fan was not working the refrigerator was also in defrost mode. This is not saying that the defrost position that you happened to catch it in was a normal function. If the defrost element was not on during defrost this will not allow the ice buildup to melt away and clear the evaporator for a fresh clear flow of cold air during normal running time. Also if the defrost thermostat is bad it will not allow the defrost element to come on during the defrost cycle. In short one of all four items could be the problem. Let me know, Sea Breeze

Ge fridge

The defrost heater is a coiled heating wire inside a glass tube. The glass tube is usually not the easiest to see through, but you may be able to see a break in the wire. It would not hurt to apply 120 volts across the element. A good defrost element would then begin to glow red in just 10 or 20 seconds. Warranty is one year on parts and labor. Be sure to melt all frost off evaporator using a hair blower before reassembly.

Evaporator fan not working

Ha ha
Most G.E. the fan will not work if limit control is not working, staying in open position. This also means the defrost heater will not work. If you had an amp probe it would simplify your diagnoses. you could put it into defrost, and if the amps showed heater was not coming on it would prove my theory. The limit control is a small button like switch about 1 inch in diameter cliped to the cooling
coils in back of freezer. Hope this helps.
