Hi. Thank you for the reply. Since i posted, although the ice is still built up at the back of the fridge section, the fridge is not feeling chilled and is now too warm. I think the ice in the fridge may have built up over previous weeks. As someone who knows nothing about fridges, how would i find out if it is the heater or connectors on this particular model (frigidaire elite)? Thank you.

You would have to remove all of the shelves and screws to the back cover inside the fridge and locate the heater. It is a long black rod looking element like what is in your oven. Trace it to the wire connections one one the right of the coil the other one the left and ohm it out using a multimeter to see if it's good or not.

Sounds like your heater is either out or the connectors are loose causing it not to be able to cool properly from ice build up

SOURCE: freezer/fridge won't get cold enough

Madezmom, you have a defrost issue. If your model starts with 106 you more than likley have a bad defrost bi-metal, I will attach a picture of bad one. This sits on the evaporator in the freezer section behind the panel. You will have to remove the shelves and remove the back panel. Defrost the evaporator completely. The part number for the bi-metal is 2196155. See if yours is bulged like the one in the attached photo. If so, that's your problem..Catriver..post back.

The unit was built bt LG. It is a computer controled unit and the timer is built into the main control board on back of the unit. However, the most likely cause of the broblem is the defrost terminator located on the evap on the upper right hand corner. Also, try unpugging the unit it will reset the computer board. You will also have to defrost the unit.

The red warning light will not go out?

1. Has the fridge freezer just been
installed? If so, this is normal and the
light will go out when the correct
temperature has been reached.

2. Has the fridge freezer been loaded
with a large quantity of food? If so,
the light will go out when the correct
temperature has been reached.

3. Have the doors been closed
properly?

Where is the defrost timer motor on my kenmore elite 596.76529500 refrigerator

The defrost timer is built into the control board on your model but diagnosing the defrost system like defrost heater and defrost thermostat first would be your best bet to resolve any problem with those first before replacing the 67005396 Control Board. If not defrosting you will need to unplug power cord from the wall remove items from the freezer and then the back wall inside freezer back to expose the evaporator coils so that you can use a hair dryer to melt the ice cause when not defrosting. This way you can see to test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. Item 15 in this photo HERE is the 67002493 Defrost Heater Assembly Before we go any further could you tell me the symptoms your fridge is having? I can walk you through this if you like.

Kenmore classic bottom freezer refrigeration warm but freezer is cold

I would guess you have just caused a build up of ice to block the air way, which normally takes cold air into the fridge. manually defrost (unplug and wait until the ice goes away) then restart and it should be fine

Bottom frezzer is working but fridge is not blowing cold air

Refrigerator gets cold air from freezer compartment. Either the air flow is blocked by food items or ice, or the recirculating fan is not working.

The most common failure is that the freezer coils get all iced up becuase the defroster timer, defroster thermostat, or heater has stopped working.

When it's running, you should feel cold air blowing out of the vents that are in the fridge, otherwise, the 'air tower' (air vent) is blocked with ice.

If you manually defrost the whole thing, and it runs fine for a day or so, then it's not defrosting properly. If you manually turn the defroster timer, and you don't hear the scorching/hissing/gurgling of the defroster working, then that would confirm a fault in the defroster circuits.

Based on the following thread, it's probably a bad defrost thermostat.

Model 550, the iside is getting a layer of ice

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.
