The answer is 36 and 9,

Here is how you get it.
a + b = 45
a - b = 37
add the two equation to get
2*a + 0 = 72
solve for a so
a = 72 / 2 or 36
put a into the first equation
36 + b = 45 and then solve for b
b = 45 - 37 or b = 9
I hope this helps.

### I'm trying to figure out a 3x3 magic square where the rows equal 21 18 10 and the columns equal 15 24 13 using the numbers 1-9

I don't think you can do it! Could you check your numbers.

If we are using the numbers 1-9 once and only once in a 3x3 magic square, the sum of the rows + the sum of the columns should be 90, since 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 in the rows adds up to 45 and 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 in the columns adds up to 45.

When trying to solve, the magic number seem to be the sums 24 and 10. To get 24, the only three numbers that add to 24 are 7 + 8 +9. Similarly to get 10, the lowest numbers re 1 and 2 and the smallest big number to use is 7. I then ran out of number trying to get 21, 13 and 15 sums.

Good luck,

Paul

### Luke wants to find the difference 175 - 134. He has subtracted the hundreds and tens so far. What is the sum of the two numbers he has subtracted? How much does he still need to subtract?

SUM means adding not subtracting. so if you were wanting to add the total (the sum) of the amounts of the hundreds and the tens would be 170 plus 130 which would be 300 but the remainder from subtracting 130 from 170 would be 40. That would leave the single units 5 minus 4 of which the remainder is 1. So, the remainder from subtracting 134 from 175 is the reminder of subtracting the one hundred from the one hundred which is zero added to the remainder of subtracting the tens (70 minus 30) which is the remainder of 40 plus the remainder of subtracting the units of 5 minus 4 which is 1. So you need to add the 0 and the 40 and 1 which is the remaining sum of 41.

### The sum of two numbers is 64 and three times their difference is 30. calculate the value of the two numbers?

Call them x and y
x + y = 64
3 (x-y) = 30
so x = 64 - y
and 3 (64 - y- y) = 30
64 - 2y = 10
2y = 54
y = 27
x = 37

### Jasmin is twice as old as rodney nine years ago

Hi,

Let the present age of the Rodney = X
present Age of the Jasmin = Y

As per the Situation,

Y-9 = 2 (X - 9)
Y-9 = 2X - 18
Y = 2X - 18 +9
Y = 2X-9

Second,

X + Y = 45
Y = 45 - X

Taking Both the situations,

2X - 9 = 45 - X
3X = 54
X = 54/3 = 18

Y = 45 - 18 = 27

Hence,

Age of Jasmin = 27

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

### Gr 8 question

The two numbers are 9 and 27.

Solution:
Suppose the two numbers are x and y, then,

x + y = 36 ---------1
and
x = 3y -------------2

Solving equation 1 and 2...

3y+y=36 => 4y=36 => y = 9
x + 9 = 36 => x = 27

### Sum of time difference between 2 dates and time

Try something like this:

=TEXT(\$B\$5-\$A\$5,"d ")& "days" & TEXT(\$B\$5-\$A\$5," h:mm")& " hours"

For example
B5: 8/27/2009 3:15:00 AM
A5: 8/29/2009 1:00:00 PM

The result will be "2 days 9:45 hours"
