I used a bootable flash drive. It downloaded and installed but then when I turn on the pc and put in my password, it freezes and won't fully load. This is with the new 14.04 LTS version of Ubuntu so I didn't know if an AMD Phenom can support it.

(1).. download which version of ubuntu you want.. it will dowload as an ISO file (2)now you need to burn it to dvd disk,so you will need an ISO burner it free from www.freeisoburner.com, once you have burnt the disc, you have to go into your bios settings (usually by pressing f2 on start-up) (3) set the option to boot from cd first then open cd tray place disk in then press save and exit and waid, it should then load the disc, then follow the on screen instructions... hope that helps

SOURCE: Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

I would install it from Windows if you still have it. It loads extremely easy and uninstalls just as easy. You can also test it as a live CD, so it runs without installing to test out hardware. gl

Can I override the bios at startup so that it will recognize a new hard drive - for linux?

There should be no need to play around with your bios settings. Linux will install on a brand new hard drive as the sole operating system, or on an existing hard drive alongside Windows without any problem.

If you haven't already got a Linux distro, have a look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Download whichever version of Ubuntu you prefer (LTS- the long term support version is recommended).

When the .iso file containing the operating system had downloaded, burn it onto a dvd, or install it on a usb drive.

Insert the dvd into the drive and restart or switch off/switch on the computer. The dvd will then kick in and offer you the choice of trying Ubuntu without installing, or a full install.

If you're using a new, empty hard drive just follow the on screen instructions and Ubuntu will install as the sole operating system.

If you already have Windows on your hard drive Ubuntu will give you the choice of either erasing Windows or installing Ubuntu alongside Windows. It's your choice.

Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows creates a dual boot hard drive. At start up you just choose which OS to use - Windows or Ubuntu. If creating this dual-boot system Ubuntu puts a (Linux) boot loader into the Windows OS so that Linux is recognised.

If you save the Ubuntu file to a usb drive you then have to change the bios settings so that your computer uses USB as the first boot device. Then restart your computer so that it boots in from your usb .. and Ubuntu will begin installing.

Whichever you use - dvd or usb - during the installation process Ubuntu will ask you how many GB of hard drive space it should use? You do not need to physically partition the hard drive. Linux will do it for you.

If it's a desktop PC you are using with Windows on the first hard drive and are fitting a second hard drive to install Linux on, or have installed Linux on the second hard drive .. and find that Linux doesn't appear at start up, it's because there's no Linux boot loader in Windows.

I quit using Windows many years ago.

Installing ubuntu on my acer x483 but it stopped, and this is what i am seeing, Udevd[261]: '/sbin/blkid -o udev -p /dev/sdb'[3102]terminated by signal 9 ( killed), What do i do next

Your installation medium may be corrupted. Try downloading Ubuntu again and burn it to disc or use Linux Live (Google it) to load it onto a USB drive to boot from. Once you do that try reinstalling it. Make sure you download the latest version, either 12.04 LTS or 13.10 (currently latest as of Nov 10th). A new version is released every 6 months and a new LTS is released every 2 years. Version number signifies the year (12 for 2012, 13 for 2013) and Month.

Toshiba satellite M45-S169 won't boot ubuntu from DVD

Your really pushing the lower minimum requirement limits if you're trying to use Ubuntu 11 or Ubuntu 12. Especially with your on-board graphics chip which borrows system ram.

Try Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx) instead.

Go Here and download the 1st link on the list under Desktop CD:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/

OR...

Here is a direct link to the ISO file you need to download and then burn to a CD:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.4-desktop-i386.iso

If you don't have Software for burning iso's to CD's then download and install this totally FREE CD Burning program:

Is this Gateway ZX-series, all-in-one computer compatible with Ubuntu Linux and will the on-board camera and sound system work under Ubuntu Linux?

Hi there,

Ubuntu linux will work with just about any device you have. The best way you can check to make sure that the camera and sound system work for sure is to burn Ubuntu to a CD, and when you boot from the CD you will have the option to run Ubuntu from the disc instead of installing it from the disc. This will allow you to try it before you do a full-blown install. Make sure you can connect to the internet though when you do this, so that if you need additional drivers to make the camera or sound system work you can download them.

there in lies the problem, you can run most games made for pc on ubuntu using wine, but if you don't have the correct display driver your fps will be horrible. there is also an app you can get made specifically for certain games called Play-On-Linux, apt-get install playonlinux. they also have a website, so you can try and google it
