Question about Coffee Makers & Espresso Machines

Open Question

Hi! I have an jura j5 machine and I haven't used the machine for almost 4 months since I was waiting for some parts to replace, i installed the new parts (ceramic valve, y connector) and although the machine seems to work I have no water coming out, instead the water (hot) comes out from beneath the machine. I tried I few cleaning cycles (with no tablet added since the water comes out from the bottom of the machine) and now it only drips very very slowly, one tine worked for 2 seconds but that's it! If I press a espresso or cappuccino button the grinded coffee on the tray is dry not watered. Can you please help me to identify the problem? John

Hi
It should take about 45 minutes to an hour to properly descale the machine. If it only took a couple of minutes you really didn't descale your machine. If you used the powder it has to disolve completly before descaling. The best way to descale is with the descaler in the tank. Turn on the machine and run about 8 ozs of water-descaler through the wand and then turn off the machine. Wait 10 minutes and repeatthe last procedure. Do this until the tank is empty. When done with the descaler, rinse out the tank and put fresh water in the tank and run the whole tank through the wand. Then fill the tank and your ready to go.

I had a similar problem with our Jura S8 and it was due to calcium build up in the selector valve which is behind the knob you turn to go from steaming to dispensing hot water. When you pull a shot, the water travels through that valve on the way to the grounds chamber. That valve has 5 lines running into it and each is retained by an o-ring and metal collar, then the collars are retained by a plastic cover.

I took the whole assembly apart and soaked it in vinegar and gently worked at it with toothpicks to remove the worst of the build up. Then I used a children's cough medicine syringe to force vinegar through the valve until it finally was clear.

If you don't want to attempt the disassembly, you might try flushing the machine with a decalcifier and cycling that valve to ensure you dispense solution through it. Hopefully that works because factory repair is around $400 plus shipping.

Sometimes certain beans do not move freely throughout the grinder. Oily beans, which is not necessarily a bad thing, do not fall into the grinder easily and tend to stick. It is necessary to sometimes to just poke or stir the beans around with your finger to make sure they fall into the grinder. For a safety measure do this while your machine is turned off.

Cannot install tray with ground basket installed, after removing. Mechanism is blocking the ground basket when the tray is slid back into the unit after emptying.

Try putting a container under the coffee spouts and pressing the rinse button. This will usually free any coffee grounds that may not have been expelled into the grounds basket from the last time the machine was used. The grounds can get stuck and block the slide path of the grounds basket.
