What causes leg cramps?

Idiopathic leg cramps

Although the cause of idiopathic leg cramps is unknown, there are a number of theories about what might cause idiopathic leg cramps. These include:
  • abnormal nerve activity during sleep which causes the muscle of the leg to cramp
  • excessive strain placed on leg muscles, such as when exercising, may cause the muscles to cramp at certain times
  • a sudden restriction in the blood supply to the affected muscles
Also, tendons naturally shorten over time as a person gets older, which may explain why older people are particularly affected by leg cramps. Tendons are tough bands of tissue that connect muscles to bone. If your tendons become too short, they may cause the muscles connected to them to cramp.
Secondary leg cramps
Secondary leg cramps are caused by an underlying condition or another identifiable cause. These include:
  • pregnancy: the extra weight of pregnancy can place strain on the leg muscles, making them more vulnerable to cramping
  • exercise: leg cramps are often experienced when resting after exercise
  • neurological conditions (conditions that affect the nerves in your leg muscles): for example, motor neurone disease or peripheral neuropathy
  • liver disease: if your liver stops working properly, toxins will build up in your blood, which can make your muscles go into spasm
  • infection: some types of bacterial infection, such as tetanus, can cause muscle cramps and spasm
  • toxins: in some people, high levels of toxic (poisonous) substances in the blood, such as lead or mercury, can cause leg cramps
  • dehydration: in some people, low levels of water in the body can lead to a drop in your salt levels, which can trigger muscle cramps

Certain medications have been known to cause leg cramps in a small number of people. These include:

My wife is having horrible menstrual cramps. what medication can she take to ease them?

from :

  • NSAIDs. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be helpful in relieving the pain of menstrual cramps. Your doctor may initially suggest taking over-the-counter NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or naproxen (Aleve), at regular doses starting the day before you expect your period to begin. Prescription NSAIDs, such as mefenamic acid (Ponstel), are also available.

  • Hormonal birth control. Oral birth control pills contain hormones that prevent ovulation and reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. These hormones can also be delivered in several other forms: an injection, a patch you wear on your skin, an implant placed under the skin of your arm or a flexible ring that you insert

Why do I get back pain when I get my period?

Back pains during your period are very common, especially in the first few days. They are cramps which are usually caused by an excess of prostaglandins during your cycle. These cramps radiate to the back as well as the abdomen and that's what causes the pain.

Cam belt renewal, difficulty in removeingcrankshaft pulley nut.

Hi these can be vert tight indeed if you cant borrow a mechanics nut runner gun to get it undone
put the car in gear with the handbrake on or even better get a freind to hold the foot brake on
place a large "g" cramp around the front pulley to hold it tight and use a long peice of steel tubing on the end a socket handle to undo the nut sounds a bit crazy but this 100% works you need to be patient it going to come off just be carful to jam the "g" cramp up against something thats not going to break when you put load against it .under no circumstance turn the starter this will cause damage or injury ,once you have loosened the nut the trick is to not stop undoing it keep turning it until its fully out and off as they are often treated with loctite thread lock compound and will go tight again if left partially undone good luck
