Back to the camera top right (I think) a button with icon 5 white blocks in the shape of a plus sign in a white box, press this to display the AF points. Use the left / right up / down button to select desired AF points

SOURCE: no AF point display indicator in Creative Zone modes.

In creative mode I would imagine that you are required to choose the focus point. Try the arrow buttons.

Maybe you could rephrase your question. It sounds like you're just saying the same thing..."center spot to be the AF focal point" and "continues to function in a auto SPOT mode"....that's the same thing!

In my manual settings modes, I am asking for the center spot to be the AF focal point, but it continues to function in an auto spot mode when shooting!

D90 AF assist light doesn't come one in M mode???

Check to see whether you're set for AF-C in M, A, and P modes. The AF assist doesn't light in AF-C. Auto mode automatically selects AF-S, so the AF assist would come on then.

Auto Focus stopped functioning and there is no AF point display

Could be that the electrical contacts on the lens / body need gentle cleaning - try that.

Manual focus points 40D

Try checking C.Fn III, 3: AF point selection method. Yours might still be on option 2.

0: Normal - Works by pressing the AF Point button and then the Multi-controller.

1: Multi-controller direct - Press the multi-controller to directly select an AF point (without first having to press the AF Point button). Pressing the AF button reinstates all AF points for auto AF point selection.

2: Quick Control Dial direct - turn the Quick Control Dial to select AF points. In this mode, AF points will not be displayed on the LCD panel.

Will not auto focus

"... Autofocus Lock ("AF-L"). Pressing the AF-L (Autofocus Lock) button enables the Nikon F4 to lock the focus. Simultaneous lock of AF-L and AE-L is possible. "'FREEZE FOCUS" - is another great function in the F4. It allows automatic shutter release when subject enters a pre focused distance - available with Nikon MF-23 and/or the 250 exp. MF-24 Multi-Control Back. i.e. with the shutter button fully depressed, the shutter is automatically fired when a subject comes into a preset manually focused position. This function is recommended for sports races because the racing course is usually known beforehand. It also works well in wildlife remote control photography, scientific, forensic and other technical photography. ..."
