1. Fuel tank dip tube (fuel filter) to siphon side of primer bulb
2. Primer output to carb in.
3. Fuel return to tank.
Likely you have reversed the primed bulb lines. Disconnect the line from the primer bulb to the carb. If you have the correct connection from the tank to the primer bulb, fuel will spurt out the bulb as you press the bulb
If no fuel, move the line at the primer bulb to the other primer connection. Press primer bulb a few times and fuel should spurt out bulb.
If still no fuel then a problem with the fuel tank dip tube or plugged filter
I suggest cleaning out the fuel tank I also recommend installing a NEW fuel filter, New fuel lines and a new primer bulb. This will take care of the fuel system for awhile. All of these parts are available on Ebay, by many online vendors or at small engine repair shops everywhere. Take the old lines with you so you get the correct size and get at least 1 foot of each size you need. You will need the extra length to be able to pull the main fuel line thru the tank to install the NEW fuel filter you get. Even if you use your old filter (not recommended) you will need extra length to reinstall it.
You either need a new primer bulb (leaking air) or you have the fuel lines routed wrong. Here is the correct fuel line routing just in case:
Small diameter line out of fuel tank (has filter in-tank on end) connects to the side of the carburetor that has the fuel pump....that is the cover without the hole in it. Other larger diameter fuel line out of tank connects to the longer nipple on the external purge/primer bulb. The bulb "pulls" fresh fuel from the fuel tank to the carb and then out of the carb to itself, where it then pushes any air/old fuel back into the fuel tank. The remaining larger diameter fuel line in this setup goes from the metering chamber (has cover with writing on it and a vent-hole) side of the carburetor to the smaller nipple on the purge/primer bulb. Again, on the primer bulb, the longer nipple has a line going directly from it to the tank. The shorter nipple on the bub has a line from it going to the metering chamber side of the carb.If the purge/primer bulb is on top of the carb...small line from carb body to small hole in tank with filter. Larger diameter line goes from the bulb on the fuel pump side of the carb to the larger hole in the fuel tank where the line is held in place with a nylon nipple connector that keeps the line from pulling out of the tank
This is an ongoing issue for users, and rightfully so. Years ago on 2-stroke trimmers, primers were not even used,...you choked the carb with a slide lever and gravity let fuel enter the carb from above...a few pulls, a "pop"...slide it off of choke and away you went. If the purge/primer bulb is on top of the carb...small line from carb body to small hole in tank with filter. Larger diameter line goes from the bulb on the fuel pump side of the carb to the larger hole in the fuel tank where the line is held in place with a nylon nipple connector that keeps the line from pulling out of the tank. Please vote on this solution.
You can go to Home Depot and for about $7 U.S. dollars, they sell a replacement filter, primer bulb and install wire. It is really cool. You put the install wire thru the hole in the tank where the lines come out of the tank. There is a small hook on the end. This hook fits thru a small hole in the new fuel line end which is cut on an angle. Basically this allows you to fish the new line into the tank thru the gas fill port up thru the small holes in the tank. Then just plug the tubes on the carb. Easy Pizzi !!!
The hose in the tank with the filter on the free end connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
If the saw is equipped with a primer bulb, the output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill the bulb as it inflates).
The pressure side of the primer returns displaced fuel to the tank as it is depressed.
Take lots of notes and a few digital photographs will help with reassembly. HTH Lou
There are 3 separate lines. Usually one is a bit smaller than the others. One line goes from the primer bulb to the tank..Usually the small one. Another goes from the tank to the carb...usually an inline filter in this line. There are 2 connections on the carburator...connect to the lower one, if you have 2 different sizes of tubing, this will be the larger of the 2. The 3rd line goes from the primer bulb to the upper carb connection...this is also a small line (if your model has 2 sizes of tubing). Good luck.
The hoses run through a hole into the gas tank, they are fitted with a filter inside the tank. Drain the tank, and manipulate the hose end to where you can grab it throught he filler hole, Remove the filter, run new gas lines into the tank and through the filler hole to replace the filter, reattach to the carburator. The primer bulb should have 4 small screws attaching it to the carburator. Remove the screws, place in new primer bulb, and you should be back to trimming asap.
Line from tank with the filter on it is the supply line and goes to the
carb inlet fitting. This is typically on the "bottom" of the carb (with
the tank being up) and will usually have a fitting with barbs or a
bulge on it to ensure a tight fit. The other fitting on the carb is the
return line and is usually a straight tube fitting with no barbs. That
line goes the suction side of the primer bulb. The third line goes from
the outlet of the primer bulb to the return barb fitting in the bottom
of the tank. Fittings have to be removed from tank to properly install
the new hoses on them. Remove retainer ring on outide of tank and push
fittings into tank, then shake out of the fill opening. More details on
replacing hoses are listed in another post about Repairing Ryobi
trimmer.
Runs fine now. Thanks for your help.
