Question about Samsung HCM4216W 42" Rear Projection Television

Samsung 42" HCM4216W Dim Horizontal line across screen

I have about a 3 inch wide horizontal line across my screen. It does not show up in the same place everytime. It is not a solid color just dimmer than the rest of the picture. The line is more noticeable on the regular channels and hardly noticebale at all on the High Def channels. I am noticing a second line start to form on some channels depending on how bright the background is.

I have replaced the convergence board in this 3.5 year old set once before but that was about a year ago. No problems until now. I was thinking of ordering new STK392 chips and replacing them on the old convergence board and try to replace that board again inside the TV. Does this logic sound good or am I off base with this problem.

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH CONVERGENCE or any of the stk integrated circuits. There are few capacitors close to the vertical output ic, they are usually blue or red (could be 1000uf 50volts for e.g.)That where the problem is

Our three year ol Samsung TV has dark horizontal lines across the top of bottom of the screen. It is getting worse

Welcome to fixYa!

When you see lines like these across your LCD, it indicates a problem with your monitor's electrolytic capacitors.A faulty filter capacitor in the power supply board (SMPS board) can cause horizontal lines across your monitor screen.Horizontal screen lines are one of the most visible problems I see in LCD monitors & TV's that are 3-7 years old. It can happen as much from heat, humidity & less-than-ideal operating conditions, as it can from fluctuating current supply or manufacturing defects.

The way to repair horizontal screen lines is by removing the capacitors from the printed circuit board (PCB) and testing them with a LCR meter.

If it shows zero, there's your confirmation that the specific capacitor needs to be replaced.

now if you can replace them your welcome but i wont suggest that , cause you may break it more....!

any ways do comment if it helped you in any manner!

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as

The screen has a wave across it you can see two of everything.

The convergence is out . There are big ICs in the tv that go bad or get bad solder connections, that control each CRT to focus the picture one on top of the other. DO NOT move or try to adjust lens. The fluid is a coolant like in your car to keep the tubes cool.

JVC TV 27" Black line on top of screen

This is for the original problem.. Not the second post.

It's a problem in the horizontal deflection circuit. The parts will be available, but you will be in for some daignostic repairs also to find out why it failing or if it has failed on it's own.
There should be a few caps near the IC (an LA7840) that could also be causing the problem. Click the link, it will make it easier to locate the part inside.

This is the kind of repair best left to a TV tech, but get it done now and it won't cost anywhere near as much as it will later.

Green lines on my Sony projection

Those are called retrace lines and they are the result of the blanking pulse not having the desired effect. This could denote a problem in the Horizontal section of the TV. In this case the green gun is not being turned off as it goes back to the left side of the screen.
