Question about Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console

PS2 Metal square loose inside?

Opened my son's PS2 to repair the broken CD lid and a loose square piece ofmetal fell out! It has a threaded hole in the centre, but this doesn't seem to line up with any of the screws I've taken out.

Any ideas as to where it should be fixed, or indeed if it is necessary??

Yes it is loose in there on the plastic. The pressure from the other side holds it in place. You could install a small screw if you want to make sure it stays in place.

There is a loose part rattling within my transparency hood which prevents it from working - how can I repair this ?

I just had this problem too. What has probably happened is that the belt/wheel assembly within the upper lid has broken loose from its plastic housing. It is normally retained in place by two weak plastic posts, each having a plastic extrusion that holds the metal housing for the wheel in place. Just minor stress can apparently snap off the plastic extrusions. (Nice quality workmanship, Epson.)

Unplug the upper lid and remove it. Unscrew the 5 retaining screws and then use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry the bottom of the unit away from the rest of the housing. Stabilize the wheel mechanism so that you can rotate the whole unit around in order to grab the broken plastic pieces and small spring without allowing the wheel mechanism to crash into things. Superglue the two broken plastic pieces to their proper mated location on the lid, and wait about half a day for a solid bond. Then fit the wheel housing over the two plastic pieces so that the thin silver bar is pointed toward the back of the lid. (Do NOT place the spring over the thin silver bar yet.) Fit the orange belt properly around the wheel. NOW, push the wheel housing carefully toward the front of the lid until there is slight tension in the belt. Squeeze one end of the spring over the thin silver bar and push the spring completely into its recessed plastic trough while compressing it. Reassemble, and you're done.

Opened up a PS2 and square metal piece fell out

If you look on the left hand side of the top plastic bit you will see what looks like 3 holes. You have to place metal bit to match up with the central hole but in the other half. The smaller side fits in a perfectly sized hole.

Disc not spinnin'

I had a similar problem but mine didn't fall out luckily...

You'll find a space for the metal clip (please say you kept it) at the back left of the console (you may need a torch to see as it is quite small. The metal acts as a connector to tell the ps2 when the lid is shut and to commence disk reading, otherwise as you experienced, disks won't spin

Ps2 trouble loading

Hi DanDancooke,

I believe your PS2 is extremely dirty and full of dust and lint. It needs to be opened up and cleaned out throughly.

I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. Remove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the Reset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the CD tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the CD area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. Remove the little white disc from the CD tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and you’re in business.
If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to a Repair shop. Click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. then choose "Video Game Consoles". Then you pick a Good Repair shop. My shop is listed, but I cannot divulge the name in this forum. Cost will be $25 plus shipping. Shipping is usually $8.95 to the USA
