Question about Sharp Audio Players & Recorders
Sharp cd/ cas XLP404
As long as it is playing and not giving any trouble, leave it as it is. If it is in a room where people also smoke, it could be possible you have to clean the laser. There are special CD's, with a little brush glued on its surface. Don't try to make it yourself.
When you put it in a cd player, a voice tells you to plat trac 12 or so and there it will play for a few seconds, cleaning dust from the lens of the laser.
If the player does have real trouble, go to a repairshop and ask what it will cost. On Ebay, look what a replacement will cost and decide what you want. Repair or replacement.
The picture shows the little brus on my cleaning CD.

SOURCE: Adcom GCD 700 tracking problems
I experienced this problem awhile back with mine. I had it serviced and the techs couldn't find anything wrong. They cleaned the laser and lubed the tray and sent it back. To my dismay, the problem re-started shortly after arrival and then stopped. By coincidence, I had just finished a home theater set up "that did not have wall to wall carpeting" and low behold the problem stopped and never re-surfaced. I summed it up to static charge/discharge which might also be your problem.
I hope that helps.

If you trust yourself enough to open the case w/o breaking stuff, then open it up UNPLUGGED, locate the laser lens (small, clear, plastic) gently clean the lens with a swab of lens cleaner for glasses.
Also clean the chrome runners that the laser assembly tracks on.

Laser might not be faulty but just a dirty lens/ rail assembly.
If thou darest open the thing, clean the lens ( GENTLY) with a swab of glass lens cleaner. Clean the chrome runners for the optics assby with a swab lcaed with WD40 or silicone.

I have the c521i with similar problem. It will play discs most of the time and sometimes can go for an hour or more before hanging up. Sometimes the disc is spinning and the laser is moving up and down (clicking) trying to read data. Sometimes the disc will stop spinning.
The replacement laser mechanism is a Sony KSS-213C and can be found by a few resellers on ebay for between $10 - 26, and also online at stores like MCM Electronics. This assembly has the laser head, gears, everything that needs to be replaced. I should get mine in the next few days. I also bought the 16 pin flex ribbon cable that is about 8 inches long that connects from the laser and goes into the circuit board. With basic DIY skills, this is a simple fix. A little care and effort is required on the laser assembly. I am told this will fix and will report back as soon as I get it installed and can verify it works.
