Off the hook

A "Phone Off Hook" message is not an error. It simply indicates that a telephone receiver isoff the hook(the handset is lifted) and the telephone line is open. This message would be expected in the following situations:
  • A modem on the phone line is accessing the Internet.
  • A phone connected to the HP fax (or the same phone line) is using the line, or the handset has been lifted.
  • A credit card machine is using the phone line.
  • Another electronic device is using the phone line.
  • The Start Fax button was pressed with no telephone number entered. Pressing Stop or Cancel should return the display to a ready state.
When the other device is no longer using the phone line, the display should revert to the normal message.
Lets try the following,
Disconnect the phone cable from the back of the HP product and the message should clear. If the message does not clear, unplug the power cable from the back of the unit, wait 15 seconds, and then plug in the power cable.
if issue still exists try the followign
Disconnect the phone cable from the HP product and connect it to a single line phone. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If no dial tone is present, replace the phone cable. If a dial tone is still not present, a problem exists with the phone system.

My company has an Avaya phone system that uses Partner 18d phones. When you pick out the receiver the phone would go to one of our 4 outside lines, but recently on ext. 10 when you pick up the receiver it...

http://dstech1.com/changing-the-line-that-is-picked-up-when-you-lift-handset/

All releases of Partner
Lets say that you currently pick up line 1 to make an outgoing call, but you want to pick up your last line (in this case we will say we have 6 phone lines).
This feature is called "Auto line select"
To program Auto line select:
From extension 10 or 11:
Press feature 00
LEFT INTERCOM
LEFT INTERCOM
RIGHT INTERCOM
Enter the extension number of the extension you need changed.
press ** (start, star)
Then the order you want the lines to get picked up
Then ** (star, star) when done
When finished, press feature 00 to get out of programming.
So, in this example I would enter my extension number (22) and press ** (star, star) and press line 6, line 5, line 4, line 3, line 2, and line 1. Then I press ** (start, star) to signify that I am done programming Auto Line Select. And feature 00 to get out of programming.
Easy as pie.

How could I switch the fax, to receive

do you mean the fax line is shared with the phone line, and you want the machine to pick up faxes when necessary, and let phone calls go? If that's the case, this mahcine is designed to be on a dedicated line. In other words, there is not setting for "distinctive ring", or to set the # of rings to pick up. It will answer any call coming in. The only thing you can do is set it to "manual receive", under "user tools", "fax features", and then you could use it for sending faxes, but it will not receive unless you switch it to fax, and press the "on hook" button.

My printer will not receive a fax saying "phone off hook". There is no phone on the HP2410, and the phone is on the hook.

A "Phone Off Hook" message is not an error. It simply indicates that a telephone receiver is off the hook (the handset is lifted) and the telephone line is open.
Checking the phone line The most common reason for this message is when a dial-up modem is accessing the Internet on the same phone line. Just as two phone calls cannot come in at the same time, two devices cannot use the phone line at the same time. If a broadband modem (such as DSL or ISDN) is on the same phone line and the message appears all the time, please contact your Internet provider for assistance. Even if a dial tone is present when listening to the phone line, the HP product may detect the broadband data connection at the higher line frequencies. Broadband modems must have a line filter installed to work correctly. Contact the telephone company for assistance. Please follow the directions below to verify functionality.
  1. Verify that the phone cable going into the HP fax product from the wall jack is a two-conductor cable type, not four-conductor. A two-conductor cable, like the one that ships with the HP product, has two copper leads in the connector. The connectors are usually clear, making it possible to see how many copper leads are inside the cable. Replace a four-conductor cable with a two-conductor cable.
  2. Disconnect the phone cable from the back of the HP product and the message should clear. If the message does not clear, unplug the power cable from the back of the unit, wait 15 seconds, and then plug in the power cable. If the message persists, see the "Problem still exists" section below.
  3. Disconnect the phone cable from the HP product and connect it to a single line phone. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If no dial tone is present, replace the phone cable. If a dial tone is still not present, a problem exists with the phone system. Continue with the steps below if a dial tone is present.
  4. Plug the phone cable back into the HP product and hang up any phones with a lifted handset.
  5. Disconnect, one at a time, other phones and devices using the same phone line. Check the HP product display after disconnecting each phone or device. If the message clears after disconnecting a phone or device from the line, the problem is with that phone or device.
  6. If the message still exists after unplugging all other phones or devices, see the "Problem still exists" section below.
  7. Problem still exists
  8. If the problem still exists after performing the steps above, the line interface unit (LIU), the part that the phone line plugs into, may be defective or the HP product may need to be serviced.

Can not receive a fax

What you are experiencing is line loss.
What happens when you run a phone line to a fax with several items attaches is you lose varying signal strengths.
Seems like you should be able to say, ahh a phone line is a phone line. But you are losing one of or all of 3 things.
Either you phone line voltage is low, if its not low, your phone line current is low or you are experiencing Decibel loss.
All those have to be correct in order for the machines circuitry to pick up the call.
It's different dialing out, it just flips a relay to the line, just like you do when you lift your receiver.
On receive mode, It is the impulse from the incoming line that has to be correct to turn on the relay. So, not enough voltage, current or ampllitude. no activation of the components in receive mode.
I know it's not easy, or cheap, but when fax is important, a dedicated line is always the way to go.

Cannot figure how to set up Canon MP830 All in One Fax machine with remote answering machine

Cannot figure how to hook up Canon MP830 all in one fax with remote answering machine. I can plug in phone line to send faxes fine but when hooked up in same hole and the phone rings it goes immediately to fax and can't receive phone calls. Maybe i have phone line hooked up in wrong place on my machine. The answering machine is in our master bedroom on the other side of the house. With my last a canon also i had it hooked up to go to fax after a certain amount of rings and it worked fine. That machine got fried by lightening and i replaced it with this machine. If anyone knows what i am doing wrong i really need this fax hooked up all the time for my business.
