Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

What causes my food to freeze in my refrigerator?

Can you please help? My food has begun to freeze. I have done the normal, turned back the temperature. I assume this is similar to a commercial unit as far as how it is made as it is strickly a refrigerator with out any freezer portion attached We regularly vacuum off the coils in the upper part of the refrigerator and this is the first time we have ever had a major issue though do not get me started about GE appliances in general. I am would include the link to our schematics of this machine but it does not allow odd characters. What happens is in the bottom behind the removable drawers is what is called per the schematic, an evaporator coil. It freezes up more than it should so when it goes through the defrosting cycle, it overflows the evaporator trough and therefore water ends up pooling in the bottom of the refrigerator and eventually unto the floor. I clean up the water and place a few paper towels in the bottom and within another 12 to 24 hours, not sure on the time, but I will have a wet paper towel. The food in the bottom drawer freezes as well as foods that are close to the back of the refrigerator no matter what shelf. In our door we keep our milk in a pitcher and the top freezes. Any idea what is causing this?

In the trough there should be a hole that exits the fridge to allow the defrost water to drain away outside the rear, usually into a tray that is warmed by the compressor running. Push a drinking straw or thin wire down the hole to clear it and the water will stop pooling inside.
Check the door seal is good, and the door has no gaps around it. Check the thermostat actually stops the compressor when turned down to the lowest setting (usually number 1)

Is your thermostat working correctly? meaning it does turn off the unit. if it does let it off for a few minutes then slowly start to move to #1 and you should hear a click let it run in that setting and see if temperature is ok let it run for about 12 hours and check your temp. if ok just let it there if still freezes you need to replace the thermostat also make sure the fan cooling the compressor is also clean.

If this is truly a side by side then evaporator is in the freezer section. With exception of Sub-Zero products and a few other very expensive brands, refrigerators are primarily freezers. Air is drawn from the freezer with help from the evaporator fan and ducted to the fridge side. The thermostat controlling the freezer is in the fridge side, therefore when the fridge is cold enough (satisfied) It shuts down the compressor and by then the freezer is cold enough to freeze. If the evap fan is not working the cold air can backtrack through the veggie drawers and freeze some items. Normally the cold air enters at the top left and is controlled by the other knob (not the thermostat knob, all are different) newer GE refrigerators use a computer and electric/mechanical damper to control the air from the freezer. Older models just a mechanical linkage. Too much ice at the back wall of the freezer can mean the defrost heater is blown, defrost termination sensor is bad or defrost timer/sensor is bad. Freezers defrost between every 6-12 hours. Manual timers can be located Behind the lamp cover at the top back fridge side, pull off the knobs and pray the cover comes off. If yours is computerized, call a tech, the test procedure can get you shocked or injured or dead. A stuck thermostat could be the main reason causing the unit to run non-stop except during defrost. Also check integrity of your door gaskets. Good luck!

Excessive moisture is accumulating by the evaporator. If the door gaskets are not sealing properly excessive moisture gets into refrigerator and the evaporator gets more ice buildup. Also to be checked is the time period between defrost cycles. If the timer motor has gotten sluggish, there will be excessive time between cycles and a larger quantity of ice will be melted - could be more than what the tray is designed for.

SOURCE: leaking water in refrigerator

This is a common problem that happens when the defrost condensate line becomes blocked. Sometime it will leak and freeze inside the freezer and other times it will find a place inside the fresh food compartment. I'm going to add a couple of links below for you to read and review so you can get a better idea of what is happening. On the first link you will need to scroll down a little. Let me know if this is helpful, Thanks, Sea Breeze

What I do is call my local Appliance Parts Store with my model no. They are extremely helpful .
Get freezer and ref thermometer. Ref is probably too cold.
Freezer should be 0 to 10 degrees. Ref 33 to 35

SOURCE: My GE Monogram side by side built in refrigerator will not freeze ice or keep food frozen. It stays just under the freezing temperature. The refrigerator portion seems to work. Can anyone help?

its possible that its either short of gas or the little fan motor in frezzer/fridge is not working, but if its only making ice now and then its sounds like a gas shortage

PSC23NSTESS FREEZING VEGTABLES

Side by Side ModelsIf foods, such as fruits and vegetables, in the refrigerator are freezing, it can be caused by several things. First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If food in the bottom of the refrigerator is freezing, this could be caused by a refrigerator not having enough food to absorb the cold air.
  • If food in the door is freezing, move the door bins up or down so they are one notch away from freezer vents (Side by Side models only).
  • The fresh food control should be at the normal setting of 5.

First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Since the cold air coming into the fresh food section originates in the freezer above, the rear of the top shelf will be the coldest spot in the fresh food area. Avoid placing delicate items that freeze easily on the back half of this shelf.
  • If food is freezing in the produce (fruits and vegetables) or meat pan, it may be that the temperature controls are not set high enough. Since cold air naturally falls, the pans can get too cold if the refrigerator is not running long enough to maintain good air circulation. Adjust both controls up one notch.

Our crosley refrigerator freezes our food, and if you turn it down food get's to warm the refrigerator is 2 yrs. old

Assuming your food gets warm when both control settings are at normal positions, or for that matter, freezes, in the refrigerated section, at normal positions, your problem will most likely be caused by a faulty cold temperature control not sensing temperature correctly, and needs to be replaced.

Refrigerator is freezing food . temp set 40 model:rb195bssw samsung

Hi, this problem is going to be with the running thermostat2.gif. (cold Control). It has gone bad and stays open which in turn will keep the compressor running continually and will cause the fridge to get colder and freeze food. It can normally be located in the control panel inside the fridge (it is the control that has wires, the other is the damper). Locate the thermostat and replace it. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to comment again. Good Luck!! Mike

Ge fridge GSS25LFGww, fridge part freezing food

Hi, Change the controls back to normal settings. Make sure the freezer is getting 0 to 5 above. If the freezer is getting cold enough, try and turn the cold control to 1 and see if the refrigerator shuts off. It sounds like the cold control in not working properly and will need to be replaced. NOTE: The freezer temp has to be right temp or the fresh food side will not work proper.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can assist you further.
