Replace the battery now. Batteries make gas when they are charged and when they are used. They are vented to allow the gas to escape. If a battery shorts internally, it will produce a lot more gas and swell from the internal pressure..

check out this picture, it shows the 2 batteries wired up.
Notice that the batteries are flipped opposite of each other.
So from left to right its: bottom red, bottom black, top black, top red
Between the 2 batteries there is 1 red to black connection.
Then black to black-wire to circuit board
and red to red-wire to circuit board.

Well you see it may not charge properly, on the other hand it may just trickle charge it so ok. It will NOT hurt anything though it would just last longer.. providing it gets charged.
