Replace the battery now. Batteries make gas when they are charged and when they are used. They are vented to allow the gas to escape. If a battery shorts internally, it will produce a lot more gas and swell from the internal pressure..

SOURCE: Belkin 1500va (uses 2 - 12v 7ah batteries)

check out this picture, it shows the 2 batteries wired up.

Notice that the batteries are flipped opposite of each other.
So from left to right its: bottom red, bottom black, top black, top red

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1092&page=2

Between the 2 batteries there is 1 red to black connection.
Then black to black-wire to circuit board
and red to red-wire to circuit board.

Testimonial: "excellent!"

SOURCE: I HAVE HP 800VA UPS AND I WANT TO ATTACH A 12V

Well you see it may not charge properly, on the other hand it may just trickle charge it so ok. It will NOT hurt anything though it would just last longer.. providing it gets charged.

How do I know when I need to replace the battery

The only thing you will look out for is the specs of the battery. That is the voltage that it gives out. The size usually determines the hours it can provide power on a full charge.

ok how long you brought the ups and how long you had not start the the ups usaully ups is power dead change the battery and try to power up it should work be sure that all connection is connect properly before power up the ups.. if the ups doest work that will be the mainboard problem you hav to call for vedor to repair the unit.. yes these fuse for the ups but it unlikely to be blown so should worry of the fuse it self.. change of battery come with different spefc for the ups.. eg su3000rmi3u, sua3000rmi3u, su3000rmxl3u --- battery replacement is 8 pcs of 12v 7ah. sua3000rmi2u-- 6 pcs of 12v 7ah or 8 pcs 12v 5ah. su3000rminet-- 4 pcs 12v 17ah,
