Quote from the manual:
The USB port provides power only, and will not playback music from a USB device.

Hi there,
These are the minimum system requirements of the flash drive you bought.
• Computer with a USB port • Latest version of Windows XP, Windows Vista® , Windows 7 • Mac® OS X 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 • Minimum free disk space: 600MB recommended
Any way back to the question, there is a protective plastic clip for the gold contacts have you tried removing it before using, it might be the reason you cant stick it to any USB port. Any way don't lost the cap so it can lessen dirt on the gold contacts.

Hopefully this information helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.

I am a student in school, and I am not to computer savvy on Flash drive.. It did not come with any instructions on how to use it. It is a Cruzer USB 2.0 Flash Drive (4GB) Can you help me with step-by-step...

  • Boot up your computer and find an open USB port. These are small, rectangular ports typically on the sides or backs of laptop computers, or on the fronts or backs of desktop towers.

  • Plug your flash drive into the USB port. The drive will slide in only if it is turned in the right direction, so if you have trouble inserting it, turn it over.

  • Make sure your computer sees the flash drive. It should launch a menu, letting you know that it has found a new storage device. You can choose an option from the menu or close the menu if you don't need to immediately access the flash drive.

  • Install the flash drive's driver if your computer doesn't recognize the flash drive. The flash drive's packaging should include the manufacturer's website address. Open your Internet browser, go to that address, and download the flash drive's driver from the site. Install the driver on your computer. After that, your computer should be able to recognize your drive.

Recycle it, and spend $10 to buy a replacement 2GB card.
Much less money than paying a technician a minimum of $25 to _try_ to trouble-shoot it.

The flash drive purchased doesnot work when pjugged into the usb port on my desk top but it work on my lap top? How do I get it to work on my desk top

    Hello claponte

    FIRST, THE HARDWARE SIDE:
If you just purchased your flash drive, then it is using the USB 2.0 (high speed) standard. Prior to that were USB version 1.1 and, before that, USB 1.0 standards.

USB 2.0 devices will still work when plugged into USB 1.1 ports - just at a reduced speed)

However, computers w/ USB 1.0 ports cannot properly detect USB 2.0 devices. On those computers, you'd need to install a USB 2.0 expansion card in order to add USB 2.0 functionality to the computer.

    SECOND, THE SOFTWARE (DRIVERS) SIDE:
On the software side, USB devices are "plug-and-play" on Windows XP & Vista systems. This means they do not require special drivers or installation for them to work properly. The drivers needed for them to operate are already built into the operating system.

However on operating systems prior to Windows XP (Windows ME, Windows 98SE, Windows 98...) drivers are needed for USB devices to be detected properly.

These are two possible reasons why your flash drives don't work on your desktop computer.
    (01) The computer is an older one using USB 1.0 technology
    (02) The operating system is pre-Windows XP

Another possibility is (if your computer USB ports are at least 1.1 standard and your operating system is at least Windows XP) there is an issue w/ the USB ports on your desktop computer. This could be a hardware or a software issue still.

Please, let us know if that's the case and we'll help you to trouble-shoot the issue.

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have any further questions.

    Thank you
    BJ
