Question about Hoover HCA390FFK Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

Frost in the fridge compartment.

Hi,

We have had this refrigerator for a while and have been happy with its performance.
(Wait for the however!)
However recently the fridge compartment has become very cold and all of the produce is being frozen. There is also a build up of ice at the rear of the fridge. The freezer compartment appears to be working correctly, although it is hard to judge the temperature there is no ice build up.
Are there any tests I can conduct to locate the issue, what parts may be required and some guidance on rectifying the problem?
I have tried to familiarise myself with the fridge a bit and hopefully with a bit of guidance I may be able to avoid the need of a call out engineer.

Many Thanks,

Rob.

I have the same problem with the contents of the fridge being frozen solid. When you turn the thermostat dial to the 0 position, you can still hear the compressor working. You probably need a new thermostat as the existing one is not cutting out. I have asked if anyone knows the procedure for changing the thermostat, as replacement parts can be bought 'off the shelf'. This one thermostat controls the fridge and the freezer, so, although you might not be aware of it, the freezer is too cold as well.

I have a Hoover HCA390FFK that has been frosting up and freezing all my produce too. The thermostat is actually connected to the PCB board in the top compartment above the fridge. The wire then runs to the back part of the fridge and is imbedded inside insulation that allows the temp sensor to sit at the back of the fridge. I had to cut a square of the insulation out and then put the new thermostat sensor in, and seal with instant foam sealant.
East job, but messy.
Immediately, it fixed my problem.....for a while. Now, the super freeze light flashes again and my problems have returned. I am thinking about replacing the PCB Board entirely and hope that helps.
That's my only other thought....maybe lightning struck the fridge and fried some of the components that tell the thing to shut off and defrost.
When I first got the fridge, the thing would shut off, and I would hear a 'crackling' sound as it defrosted. Now all I hear is a strange groaning sound coming from the back, like it's trying to defrost but can't. Is my fridge constipated?
They certainly don't make em like they used to.........

Hi,

I lowered the refrigerator control to 1 which should have made it warmer but it had no affect.
Unfortunately I do not have a thermometer around to measure the temperature of the fridge and work away from home during the week so have not had the chance to aquire one.
I have ordered a PCB board which contains the appliance controls and I noticed is not too difficult to change out. The other thing that I thought it may be is the temperature sensor for the fridge but I have yet to work out where this is and if it will easy to change. My hopes for the present time lie in the PCB.
If you think of anything further please post and I will keep you informed as to how it goes.
Thanks,
Rob.

You didn't mention what setting the refrigerator control was set at, and if it has seperate controls for thr crisper drawer. As most appliances the cold in the fridge compartment comes from the freezer section. Also, setting a thermometer in the fridge compartment (it should be at least 40 degrees and obviously higher than 32) will help figuring this one out.

Well, as you have already got a new board change it and see. As for the sensor for the thermostat, it has a probe that is in the fridge somewhere and that will be attached to the thermostat. there is a way to check the temperature controller, but it requires a volt meter and you will need to trace the connection at the thermostat. (the as past mentioned thermometer will help too)

Hi!!

Try lowering the temp. setting for the fridge one click at the time. (wait 24 hrs. between adjustments).

If unit is cooling fine, there is no need to spend money on check up. You can clean the compressor compartment with your vacuum cleaner. Just unplug unit before you do it. There is also a little fan that needs to get cleaned with a degreaser moist rag,

Frosty

IS THE BACK OF THE FREEZER CLEAR ICE OR WHITE FROST?
IF IT IS WHITE FROST, THERE IS A FAILURE OF THE DEFROST CYCLE. THREE COMPONENTS NEED TO BE CHECKED. THERE IS A DEFROST TIMER, HEATER AND BI-METAL. THE HEATER AND BI-METAL ARE LOCATED BEHIND THE BACK WALL OF THE FREEZER WHERE THE FROST IS BUILDING UP. IF IT IS A WHIRLPOOL, THE TIMER IS LOCATED IN THE FRESH FOOD COMPARTMENT WITH THE COLD CONTROL. LOOK FOR A HOLE THE SIZE OF A DIME IN THE CONTROL HOUSING. THERE IS A SMALL DIAL IN THERE THAT CAN BE ADVANCED WITH A SCREWDRIVER.
ADVANCE IT UNTIL YOU HEAR A STRONG CLICK AND THE
REFRIGERATOR SHUTS OFF. THAT WILL BE IN THE DEFROST CYCLE. WAIT ABOUT TEN MINUTES AND LISTEN FOR SIZZLING IN THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT. ALSO LOOK FOR A RED/ORANGE GLOW IN THE FREEZER. IF THAT HAPPENS, THE HEATER AND BI-METAL ARE O.K.
REPLACE THE TIMER. IF NOT, TAKE THE BACK PANEL OFF THE FREEZER AND CHECK THE HEATER AND BI-METAL WITH A VOLT-OHM METER. REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART.
ON G.E. REFRIGERATORS, SOME HAVE THE TIMER LOCATED BEHIND THE TOE PLATE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE REFRIGERATOR. ON OTHER REFRIGERATORS, IT IS LOCATED INSIDE THE COMPRESSOR COMPARTMENT TUCKED BACK IN A CORNER.

About the mini retro portable cooler/warmer

Hi Charlene,

Open the freezer and see if it needs a good defrosting. I know you may think you bought a Frost free Fridge, but if something goes wrong with the forst free system, It can frost up. If it is Frosted , Turn the Fridge off and use a hair dryer for about 30 minutes to melt all the fost and dry up the frezzer compartment,  It is imprtant to dry u the Freezer compartment.  Hope this helps you.
