Question about Creative Labs Zen Digital Media Player
The screen doesn't really "freeze" in that the back-light still comes on when you press buttons and the name still scrolls across the screen.
However, the screen is frozen on that song. I can't change songs, the song won't play either, and I can't exit from that screen. When I try to shut it off it won't shut off. I reset it a couple times and each time it worked for awhile afterward then the problem came up again. The last time I reset it it said "Firmware Error" and now it won't turn on or anything. I've tried reloading the firmware and that doesn't work.
Maybe the file itself is corrupt.
Have you tried with other files?
If you did and they played well all you have to do is to get the song again

Make sure you have media player 11
If you can, the best test is to try your player with another PC, to see if you still have the problem. This localises whether the problem is with the PC (most likely the USB) or the player. See the link below (search on "connection problems") for a lot more troubleshooting on this.
Download recovery tool off creative's website.
go to my computer > click on hardware tab >
click on device manager button > in the is next screen on the bottom should have>>universal serial bus controllers
(write these down just in case it cant find them)
right click on them and uninstall
reboot let windows reinstall them
Also told Microsoft hotfix causes this problem try uninstalling the last hotfix
If that doesn't fix it try the USB cable

well, after a lot of research and frustration, I found a site that had links to the right firmware versions so I could fix it! I also had to dig into the pit of despair that is my storage bins and thankfully I was able to find the CD that came with my DJ to give my computer the drivers it needed to recognize the DJ...
http://www.gotzune.com/forums/showthread.php?p=60383#post60383 go to that link and look towards the bottom for the link to your version of firmware that you need... ftp://ftp.dell.com/app/R74011.exe <--- that one worked for me!
thankfully, I was able to fix it by doing that, but not before I had to delete all the data from it in a sad attempt to make it work when it was stuck in recovery mode :( but I have all the good stuff on my computer, so it's probably better that I cleaned it up because I had too much **** on there that I didn't listen to anymore...

you can find the latest firmware and flashing utilities from the manufacturer?s website. Make sure that you back your music up first because when you do this you are setting it back to factory settings. so you'll want to run the flashing utility and that will do the rest just make sure thats the only program your running at that time if your system freezes up durring this processe then you could end up with a dead mp3 player or a fancy paper weight

Do you mean you want to update the firmware? Or your player is frozen?
If frozen, there's a hole in the left side of the device, the restart button is in there, find something thin enough and push it.
To update your firmware, go to www.creative.com and download the latest firmware installer, dock your zen with your PC and run the installer, following it's instructions as you go.
