Question about Toshiba 42HM66 42" Projection HDTV

3 Answers

Toshiba 42hm66 colors flash flouresent like when tv warms up.

Especially the dark colors like black and dark green start to flash after about 3 to 5 minutes after tv turned on.picture is still there but things like the peoples faces start to flash like they're flouresent. I've tried several things suggested on this sight and think it may be the ballast. When the weather was cooler opened window in back of tv and removed back panel and that fixed it but as temp. have risen it got worse. it was suggested to put a fan in back of the tv and that worked until now when the outside temp has been mid 80's. inside temp 70 -72 or so. i noticed it starts to get bad when inside temp gets to around 71. i have replaced the ballast fan and that hasn't worked. the old one was also ok. the other 2 fans in the tv are fine. any suggestions?????

thanks for your response. it's not under warantee and was hopeing for a fix that would be reasonably priced. thought it might be a heat related problem with one of the boards but don't know which one, if that is the case. how much does the light engine run?

thanks again, i did have tv opened 2x. cleaned all fan blades and circuit boards. i have not only changed ballast fan, but light bulb as well. again, it had been working with 2 desk fans also blowing into back of tv but now does not help.

    thanks again, Jim

thanks for your response. would it be just as easy for me to replace whatever board has these capacitors on it since i've never soldered anything on a circuit board. done other minor soldering but not on circuit boards. and which board do you think it could be?

    thanks, Jim

Hi,
My experience of TV repair says its problem of weak electrolytic capacitors in TV that can be in power supply and /or digital signal processing board.
If you are good with soldering parts in circuit boards then I would recommend to download Service Manual copy of Toshiba 42HM66 TV from Manual Zone for small fee and give a try to replace bad electrolytic capacitors in TV.
Thanks.

Main board assembly, it considers one part and its costly, available in Part Store thats why I suggested to replace capacitors but as you said, have no experience of soldering/ replacing parts on circuit boards so ask local TV repair shop to fix this issue in TV on reasonable price.

Hi Jim,
The remedy that you followed is a temporary one and someday you will have to change the bad part. It might be problem with the light engine that is very common with this model. Replacing the light engine is Toshiba's quick way of fixing most problems... the light engine is the heart of the system, so if you replace it you are most likely going to replace the problem part... However might cost you on higher side.. Please get in touch with Toshiba if TV is still in warranty.

Regards,
Srinivas

    Hi,

Most of the issues with this model (and similar models) were reported after around 2 to 2.5 years (got the information from internet). You can search google with the model number of the TV yourself. However if you want to get the price details then I would suggest you to get in touch with the regional support to get the exact price details as price details might change from region to region.

And one more thing .. even before we jump to conclusions as I did above and start changing circuit boards .. the first thing would be to check the basics ... Sorry I should have mentioned that before .. I assumed that you already opened the TV and cleaned the cooling fans that are in there. Please make sure that you unplug the TV from the power supply and drain the power in the TV as there are components that are still charged even after you unplug it from the main supply!!

Dust and loads of stuff on cooling fins can reduce the efficiency of the cooling fans which are very important for proper functioning of TV.

If that doesn't work then I will release the question from my end so that other experts can take a look as well and lets see if they have any different suggestion that might work out to be soothing on your pocket :)

    Regards,

    Srinivas

    Dear Jim,
As I said, this issue was locked to my name and now I would be releasing this question for other experts so that even they can have a look at it .. according to me there is a problem with the optical engine as it should work fine with internal cooling even without the need of external cooling .. Hope you have kept the TV in well ventilated place.. According to me replacing light engine/optical engine should resolve the issue.. however lets see what others have to say on this.

NOTE: We experts are not allowed to peep into the other experts solutions so the next expert might not be able to see what I have suggested to you however he/she will be able to read your comments and responses to my questions so please be patient in case somebody comes and repeats what I just said..

Thank you for using Fixya. All the best :)

    Best Regards,
    Srinivas.

without color correction software on your pc, you may get green tint from the flouresent flash, or use a "filter" over your lens.More expensive digital cams correct for this, back in the 35mm days, I had color correction filters I interchanged during shooting under other than daylight conditions,i.e., incadescent; flourescent;ect.

If you are using the color stream input make sure the correct color wires are plugged in the same on both ends. if color is off on all inputs and the TV menu then replace the light engine.

TV picture is red.

Normal color picture is composed with 3 colors R-G-B (Red-Green-Blue). Picture turns Red means: Missing Green and Blue colors (many reasons: bad contacts, projector tubes dead, and other...). Try to give some "tabs" to diagnose ... I don't know what is the type of your Projection TV, how long you owned it, to have more idea.
