My gateway laptop's screen lamp recently went

My gateway laptop's screen lamp recently went dark. There's slight visual appearance if you point the screeen at a light or something but aside from that you cant see anything your working on. One thing I do notice is if I close the screen and pull it open really fast the lamp kinda just goes on and off real quick with a slight clicking sound. What could the problem be?
