SOURCE: The wheel suddenly stopped turning.

HI

Determine the model of your sewing machine. Look on and under the machine for this information. Visit Singerco.com to purchase a manual if you do not have one. The manual will include schematics, threading diagrams and information on how to use your Singer sewing machine. This information can make it much easier to diagnose and repair your sewing machine.

Use the handwheel to make the needle rise and fall. Repeat this process with the foot pedal, treadle or knee press. Wind a bobbin and thread your sewing machine. Sew several test seams to assess the problems with your machine. The most common problem is a tight or sticking handwheel and machine movement.

Sounds like the motor might be having problems. I would take it in for a proper servicing.

SOURCE: When sewing, mechanism sometimes binds. Bigger problem is when finished stitching, the hand wheel binds completely. Is there a mechanical problem or someplace to insert oil?

Hello Griff

Very likely the thread is kind of bound up in the bobbin area. Just turn the hand wheel a bit forward and backward several times -after you lift the foot. Apply a gentle pull on the fabric and it should "break" loose. Often teh thread is still stretched around teh bobbin and this releases it.
Feel free to reply to this post if this does not do it.

Testimonial: "Moe, what you have suggested is not the problem. The bobbin does not get bound up. The binding/total stopping is in the hand wheel. Could not figure out how to open the cover to get inside to look at that area."

I don't have the solution, but I have the same problem. The machine "binds" or "seizes", even when the hand wheel is turned. I took the machine to dealer once and he said sometimes the machine "gets hot" and the shaft gets bent and has to be replaced if you use it too long. It has happened a second time, so i'll take it back, but this doesn't seem right to me. ???? Anyone have a similar experience or know what to do?

Serger clanking/binding?

Well first of all STOP SEWING until you have this resolved. open up the door to the loopers and hand turn the wheel while you observe carefully what it's doing. Feel for any binding as you turn the wheel while noting where the loopers are. If you find some binding or clunking Gently wiggle the loopers to check for play or slop. Everything look ok? ... If you are not mechancially inclined... please take it back and tell the guy it's worse than before (meaning he didn't repair it) Ask him to fix it properly this time on his dime.

Cutting a pin could have knocked it out of time.... if that is the case you should fess up and pay to have it timed.

Yamata FY5318 reverse lever sticking

Have you really examined the machine? I had a machine binding on me once and found that the take up lever had been bent and it was binding on the upstroke.

Usually binding is a bent or very gummed up part or bits of thread causing issues. Get out your magnifying glass and some tweezers... time to pick clean and oil.

Hand wheel won't turn

The belts needed for this machine are very specific in size, particularly the small one. The wrong belts will not work.

Look carefully at the bracket that holds the pulley. There are two screws that hold it in place. Loosen them slightly and run the machine and the pulley bracket may move on its own to where it needs to be. If not, you must find the right spot where it is tight enough not to slip and not too tight to bind.

I have a White 1999 "jeans machine" sewing machine. It suddenly froze up while sewing. I dismantled what I could and cleaned everything I could see. Appears it is somehow "bound up" between the handwheel...

How long has it been since the machine was lubricated? If it has been a while, take all the covers off and oil ( with a good sewing machine oil) not 3 in 1. Pay special attention at the ends of each shaft, most particularly, the top shaft. If this doesn't work, the machine will need professional help.
