I have had this happen about 3 times. The first time was when i figured out how to fix it. The 2nd and 3rd were temporary.(Just needed to be turned off for a moment) You need to shut the console off for atleast 15 minutes 10 at the lowest with everthing unplugged. I mean the hard drive, memory unit, and all cables, and adapters. Then after 10-15 minutes plug everything in and DON'T PRESS the BUTTONS ON THE XBOX OR THE CONTROLLERS. Press the button to open the tray and take out the game or dvd and put in a different one. If this doesn't work do it all over again and then put in a different game or dvd not the previous ones and turn on the console the same but then a soon as you get the disc in and closed in shut it off then open the tray and wait till you are at the main menu go into any program so you can't see it is reading and close the tray. If that doesn't work contact the xbox support line. Really hope this works for you.

    did this work for you?

i am afraid i can answer that what i can say is that the first time i had to do it it last a week. So as soon as you get this contact xbox support line before its too late try it a couple more times though before you call.(Check youtube. There is a video that has a different method.)p.s dont do the tapping method.

What do you do when your xbox won't read disks?

The main problem might be a big problem with the disk tray. There might be an faulty wire that has lost connection and if your disk wont event turn on, there might be a problem with the power supply that supplies the cd tray. If the disk opens and closes but doesnt read and wont say tray is in and keeps saying open tray, there might be a small fracture on some of the wires or there is something wrong with the motherboard of the xbox 360. The best way is to buy the warrenty now and send it to the xbox 360.

My 360 will not read resurfaced games and many times i ctually have to hit it in order for it to open the disk tray. i was wondering if this could be caused by a faulty laser or dvd drive?

The disk tray often gets stuck with the older models of the Xbox 360. After opening the tray, lightly spray some WD-40 onto the areas where the tray moves along.
As for not reading games, it's important that you find whether the issue is the game or the Xbox. Try playing the game on another Xbox console. If it works, your DVD drive is most likely faulty.

Wont play games just says reading, open tray.reading, open tray. reading, open tray.u get picture

Xbox 360's disk drive is starting to fail.Knocking on the top of the Xbox (when its on its side) while loading a game cansometimes get it to work, but at some point you will need to have your Xbox repaired by Microsoft or replace it.

Hi, i have an xbox 360 and when i put a game in to play it it doesnt play the game it just says open tray?? what can i do? it doesnt even want to play cds or dvds ??

I am sorry to tell you, but this occurs only when you have a faulty disk laser (the laser that is used to read the disks and play games).  Because the laser is broken, it can't read disks, and because it can't read disks, it can't tell whether or not you have even inserted a disk into the console, which is why it just says "Open Tray."  There are probably two possibilities as to what is wrong with the laser.
  • First, the laser is either completely defective;
  • Second, the laser is off center, and not in the proper position it should be in.
Honestly, there is no way to check which one you are currently experiencing unless you would like to void your warranty by opening up the console. Watch the tutorial to do that here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtm7V4NotgA
If you do not want to void your warranty (if you still have one), you can just call up Microsoft and ask for repairs to be done on your console. Here is their number: 800-469-9269.
If this helped you, please give me a thumbs up! I get cookies if you do! :)

Most likely your disk or dvd drive is dirty. Run the disk through a disk cleaner and run a dvd cleaning disk through your drive.

If that dos not work, try removeing disk, close drive, turn off console, unplug power supply, wait 10 or 20 seconds, then reconnect power supply and try again.

If that fails, assumeing other disks will read, your disk may have a major flaw. You can check with your local game store, they often have a machine that may restore your disk, (most places that I know of charge like 1 or 2 $).

I place disk in console and it says "open tray".

If your Xbox 360 will not play your games this is because of the sensors on the back of the drive overheating it is not normally the laser.

Luckily you can fix this yourself and get back to your games and to do this you need the proven Xbox 360 Repair guide.

Or you can send it in and they will fix it for you the repair will take about 4 weeks.

WILL NOT READ DISK. SAYS OPEN TRAY

Clean your disk tray and the cd. If that doesnt work try unplugging your xbox 360 for 30 mins. If all else fails send your Xbox to repairs.

Xbox 360 open tray message; not reading discs

If it won't play any games it might be the laser that reads the disk. I would suggest getting it checked out somewhere.
