I have made some changes in my canondale F7 mountain bike, and made them road bike. im looking for 26-27.5"X1.125/100 psi tires. can i get some recomandations, please?

I have a Schwin Solution FS AL mountain bike. I would like to put road tires on it. It now has 50-507 (24X1.95) on the side wall of the knobby tires. What road tire would fit?


I have done a similar thing with my mountain bike. The first number is the size of your wheel. The second number is how thick your tire is. You can get any road tire that has a "24" in the first number of the 24X***. Depending on the number after the 'X' you will probably need to get an inner tube that falls within that size. Most of the inner tubes will have a range for that second number. If the number is too large the inner tube will not fit inside the road tire.

If you're saying you want to keep your old hubs and install roadie-sized rims so you can use road-friendly and efficient tires you're looking at an expensive and wasteful project. The hubs would be the only parts that are potentially re-usable. I seriously doubt the rims you have right now are 1.95" wide. I have several mountain bikes and many wheelsets and not a single one that I can't put anything from 26x2.25 to 26x1.10" tires on. At 100-plus psi the little tires are hard as rocks and roll nice.

If you DON'T have disc the whole project is a non-starter becuase you can't arbitrarily change wheel sizes on a rim-brake-equipped bike. Disc brakes would require you to have disc-specific hubs so search the web for "700c disc wheelset" that match your disc size (if you have disc).

If you want to DIY you'll need some special tools and skills.

Then you'll have to select rims and find an online spoke length calculator so you can order the precise lengths you'll need, assuming you have data for your rims and your hubs.

Look online or eBay, too.

A Bike Shop might be willing to lace on new rims and spokes to your hubs but it will be expensive and you would be destroying presumably fucntional MTB wheels. By the time it's all ordered and installed it would probably have been cheaper and more reliable to have just purchased new wheels.

Your Serow should get around 70 Miles per gallon (28 kilometers per liter). I find that the oil in my bike is thrashed after 1000 miles of riding. It only takes one quart of oil to change it so that is probably the best interval for a single cylinder dirt bike. In you case every 1600 to 2000 kilometers. You should use only a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate/year round. 20w-50 for warm climate/touring. Car oils use different additives and may cause scoring in certain types of cam bearings. Do not use any oil that says " Energy Conserving " on the label . It will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. If you choose Synthetic oils, they will help your bike run cooler and shift easier. Shell Rotella T and Rotella T Synthetic 15w-40 are inexpensive JASO MA oils. Trials bikes use tire pressures around 10 PSI (.7 kg/cm). Lower pressures are used for better traction off road. Street bike tires run higher pressures around 30 to 35 PSI (2.1 kg/cm to 2.4 kg/cm)for road driving. This gives better cornering and tire wear. For good all around performance for on/off riding you probably want to run 25 to 30 PSI (1.8 kg/cm to 2.4 kg/cm). For mostly street use 30 to 35 PSI (2.1 kg/cm to 2.4 kg/cm). There is probably a sticker on the frame near the side cover that tells you the factory recommended tire pressure for your model. Ride and make adjustments from there.

"Track"??? Do you mean "trail", as in REAL off-road rocks-n-roots singletrack?

Ah, the 'compromise' bike dilemma. This is NOT a mountain bike frame nor are the wheels designed for hard hits. But you could try to make it work for light-duty trails.

1. They make all kinds of rubber for 29ers which use the same rim size. Search for 29er tires.

The frame and fork may limit how large a tire will have clearance. Being totally stiff (unsuspended) the off-road ride would be rough by today's MTB standards. Think: loose fillings and blurred vision, plus a lot of standing to survive the ride. That takes energy. But then there are those who have intentionally bought 'niners without suspension for some reason.

A REAL mountain bike would be a better choice, just as a REAL road bike might be for that activity if sustained speed is ever a going to be a goal.

2. Avid's make good brakes AND levers. Which end is the problem, I wonder. Pads also play a major part in stopping power.

Buy a good floor pump with a gauge (see "How to Buy a Bike Pump," under Related eHows). A small, frame-mounted pump is useful only for roadside repairs.

Understand that it's normal for most tires to lose up to 10 pounds per square inch (psi) per week. This does not mean you have a slow leak.

Look on the tire's sidewall for tire pressure recommendations. Don't exceed the maximum tire pressure listed.

Inflate your mountain bike's tires to 40 psi for dirt riding. You may wish to inflate your tires to 50 to 60 psi for city riding.


Inflate your road bike's tires to 100 psi for road riding. Some road tires have much higher psi ratings. However, 100 psi will provide a good mix of performance and comfort.


Inflate your hybrid bike's tires to 60 to 70 psi for city riding.

Can you put mountain bike rims or wheels on a road bike?


Yes, but not without consequences. The front wheel will probably fit, but the brakes won't reach the rim and it's likely that the tire will get squeezed by the fork.
A modern rear MTB hub is 135 mm wide, while a modern road hub is 130 mm, so there's your first problem. Then you'll also have the same issues with brakes not reaching and tire clearance as you had for the front.

Bikes with disc brakes can sometimes take different wheel sizes w/o any further issues, but keep in mind that pedal clearence will change.
