It is very common for elements to "catch fire" when they fail. It is really electical arching. But to answer your question you shouldnt be concerned if it ever happens to the bottom element immediatly kill the breaker it will stop instantly. dont use a fire extinguisher as it wont stop the arching. And most ovens do use the upper broil element for baking for very short intervals like 10secs on every minute or so to brown the top of product. Some models (especially older builder line ) do not

SOURCE: replacing PB010036 Bake / Broil Thermostat Viking

you do not need to take apart any switches, all you need - unplug it from power, open front panel (2 screw on each side) remove all knobs, there is 3 more screws behind them). unscrew thermostat 2 screws behind knob. open top part of stove, remove grates and cover. you will see wires to thermostat unplug them and plug one by one to new thermostat. remove old thermostat from inside the oven (it has bracket inside). put the new one. close everything back.

SOURCE: KGST307 Gas Kitchen Range: gas range will not heat up when using Bake setting...

Find the bake ignitor (you may need to remove bottom drawer or oven cavity floor to get to the ignitor). Turn on the bake. If the bake ignitor comes on (starts glowing after a few seconds) - check the amperage on the bake ignitor wires when it's on. If the ignitor is a round style - amperage should be 2.5-3A, if the ignitor is rectangular - 3 - 3.6A. If less than 2.5A or 3A respectively - replace ignitor. If the ignitor does not come on - check the voltage on the ignitor, should be the line voltage 110-120v AC. If there is a line voltage on the ignitor and it's not coming on - replace.
Ignitor part numbers for round style ones: 4342528, WB2X9154, SGR403, 5304401265;
rectangular styles: 12400035, WB13K21, WB2X9998, SGR412, NR020, 5303935066, 814269, 9753108.
Ignitors of the same shape (i.e. rectangular) are interchangeable, if you can splice the wires.

Good luck!

The top heating element comes on when you call for broil and your bottom comes on when you are set to bake. If the bottom one is not coming on when you set to bake then it is most likely bad and needs to be replaced.

Top oven of dual oven unit not reaching tempature

There are a a few things you'll want to check.

1) place the machine on bake to verify the bake element is coming on then do the same for the broil element. In normal operation both of these elements are supposed to come on helping the machine reach temperature quickly.

2) If both elements are working, let the machine cool down and then locate the oven sensor. This is going to be located at at #453 I believe on the diagram I list below:

http://www.partselect.com/ModelFrames.aspx?ModelID=1589442&ModelNum=JB850SP2SS&mfgModelNum=&ManufactureID=2&Selected=00133082i03&Position=7&mfg=GE&Type=&Mark=7

using an ohm meter this can be check and should measure out at 1099 ohms. If there is a slight difference, say something like 1087 ohms, it will cause a major difference in performance in the machine working right.

After baking and trying to set time bake a week ago, the range won't turn on at all. Nothing happens when we press bake, broil, convect bake, etc. The clock, lights, fan, timer and cook top still work.

the oven controller in the main service/selection panel has either a bad solder joint on the circuits or the start realy for the oven on the same circuit board is bad and you have to replace the whole panel you cannot just buy the relay

KitchenAid gas range superba not reaching/registering right temp.

Always preheat your oven and let it cycle at least 2 times. Your unit may show 350 but the manufactures know that it is not 350. When it registers preheated, it really means that it is at an acceptable temperature to start cooking. If you think that it may not be calibrated correctly, your owner's manual will have instructions on how to recalibrate your oven. You will be able to raise or lower the temperature by + 25 degrees or - 25 degrees. As far as the gas smell, you will from time to time smell a gas smell with a gas oven especially if you are right at it when it ignites. If you are smelling gas when it is not in use then you should be extremely concerned.

Mer5755qab oven takes an hour to heat to 200

Either your bake element is bad or there is a bad connection going to the element. This is a very high current connection so bad connections are always a possiblity. Also check and make sure your broil element is working as some ovens use it for pre-heat. Do both elements seem about the same temp? You can turn the oven on and carefully hold your hand a few inches from the element to see if they are getting equally hot. If your connections are good to the elements then one of the "calrod" elements is probably bad. You can also check the resistance of each element. Not sure of exact reading but a higher resistance means less current going to the element. Just compare reading on each one and go from there. Good luck!

Oven does not work

I assume the oven has worked at one point? Does the broil still work?

This is my experience with my White-Westinghouse gas stove:
The igniter bar is toast. There is 1 igniter bar each for the bake and broil (1 on top, 1 below). This is instead of a pilot light. Its an element that heats up to be hot enough to ignite the gas. If it doesn't get hot enough, the gas does not turn on and therefore not heat.

I went to my store and asked about this. "90+% of the time, that's the problem" So I bought a replacement and installed it myself. Problem fixed. Just had to undo a few screws to get at the bar, then connect the new one's wiring under the stove using marettes & some electrical tape, but the rest back together and that was it. I think the part cost me about $60-80 here in Winnipeg a few years ago. But it would've been at least that just for the guy to show up to look at the stove, never mind fixing it.
