Brother Hl 2140 Printing on thick paper, labels and envelopes 2 When the back output tray is pulled down, the printer has a straight paper path from the manual feed slot through to the back of the printer. Use this paper feed and output method when you want to print on thick paper, labels or envelopes.
Open the back cover
Open the manual feed slot cover.
Using both hands, slide the manual feed slot paper guides to the width of the paper that you are going to use.
Using both hands, put one piece of paper or one envelope in the manual feed slot until the front edge of the paper or envelope touches the paper feed roller. When you feel the machine pull in the paper, let go.
• Put the paper into the manual feed slot with the side to be printed face up. • Make sure that the paper or envelope is straight and in the proper position on the manual feed slot. If it is not, the paper or the envelope may not be fed properly, resulting in a skewed printout or a paper jam. • Do not put more than one piece of paper in the manual feed slot at any one time, as it may cause a jam. • If you put any Media (paper, envelope and so on) in the manual feed slot before the printer is in the Ready state, the media may be ejected without being printed on.
The paper isn't properly loaded. remove the paper then there should be a lever near the paper loading section that you push or pull to let the paper enter the feeding area. put in paper and return the lever to the proper position. check your owners manual. to get a manual try www.sharpusa.com .

Sounds like you may have a small obstruction in the scanner feed. This would inhibit making copies and sending faxes. Lift this section up slightly to inspect for small pieces of paper or dust. Blowing it out with compressed air would also be a good idea.
what you will need to do is go to a hardware store and purchase some isoprophyl alcahol. put some on a rag and clean the paper feed rollers if that fails there must be some in side that area like a peice of paper, try cutting a file folder to 8x11 in manually force feed thru a the paper feed section. good luck brother tech
Turn the printer off and open the access cover. Look for any obstructions in the paper path and remove them if necessary. (It is possible to move the carrier assembly with the power off.) Turn the printer on, load some paper, and press the Form Feed button. (On the X83, press the Select button.) Watch the paper as it feeds through and try to determine where the jam is occurring. Check to see if all the rollers are turning.
If all the rollers are turning, there may be something in the feed path that you can't see. Go to step 6. If not, there is probably a feed motor or a gear problem and the printer may require service.
If the paper is jamming under the carrier assembly, you may be able to fix it using the manual feed slot. Turn the printer off. Take a #10 envelope and feed it through the left side of the manual feed slot until it comes right through the printer to the back of the exit rollers. Move it up and down first, and then slowly move it over to the right side. If something is stuck under the black guide plate, this may work it loose.
