If you think there may be a lot of oil you can remove the spark plug and slowly crank it a few times. Also, clean the air filter, assuming you have a foam element. Wash it in soapy water and let it air dry completely. Then, put alittle oil on it, squeeze it to distribute the oil and wring out any excess. Put the filter back in and the spark plug and you should be ready to go. If it is a paper element don't try what I said above. Just remove the filter and check to see if there's any oil on it. Maybe wipe out the filter housing with a paper towel while you have it off and reinstall the filter if it's not coated in oil.

Pull the spark plug out, pull the engine through about 5 or 6 times. This should blow out most of the oil. Then squirt about a teaspoon of gas in the plug hole put the plug back in an tighten.and try it it should go . Good luck .

Cant pull rope too much comephers tack plug out can pull rope

When this happens are you tipping the mower on its side? If you tip it or put it upside down the oil will get into the compression chamber. By taking the plug out you release that pressure. You should never tip the engine on its side but you can tip a little bit to clean underneath. Just a thought if this does it all the time have some one else try to pull it. Some people are not as strong as others.

My lawn mower will start then it will die after a few seconds, what could be the problem

If the mower was tipped it is quite possible oil from the engine has traveled up the breather and soaked the air filter in oil, this would richen the engine up and stop it running, remove the air filter and check for oil saturation.

Lawn mower throwing oil from muffler

If the mower has been tipped it will have sent oil up the breather and into the back of the air filter box, this will soak the paper filer and smoke badly, remove the air filter cover and filter, run the engine with these removed until the smoking stops, now replace the filter with a new one, when tipping the mower only tip it back on the handles, not from either side.

The engine smokes excessive. the mower is 2 yearsold.

Sounds like the mower has been tipped, the engine breather is on the top of the engine, if the mower is tipped on its side oil will tavel down the brather pipe into the back of the air filter box, the filter is paper and once soaked in oil it will smoke heavily, remove the filter cover and filter, run the mower ( not cutting grass ) until the smoke stops, now replace with a new paper filter, check the oil level in the engine, if low top up.

My push mower was stored for over a year tipped up, and all the oil leaked out. It won't start now.

The paper air filter will now be soaked with oil, remove the filter completely, remove the spark plug and crank the engine to evacuate any oil above the piston, clean/replace the spark plug and re fit, top the engine oil up if low, now attept to startbthe engine with the filter still removed, once it starts it will smoke heavily until it clears the oil in the bore.

I put too much oil in my lawn mower and when I start it up it smokes

Hi patsy hale...
You need to drain the over fill of oil out of your mower, if not it could damage the engine, if it has not already done so.
If you have a drain plug it will be on the bottom of the engine under the mower housing.
Remove and drain out until you reach the right level the oil should be at.
If you do not have a drain plug under the mower then you will have to tip the mower over on its side with the oil fill plug out and drain the excess oil that way till you reach the proper level.
I hope you have not done permanet damage already, if it still smokes after a a few minutes of running then you do have major problems.

I need to change the oil - how

warm up the mower for a few minutes. This gets the oil thin and suspends the dirt in the oil.

Then, get a pan big enough to hold about 20 ounces of oil.

remove the oil filler cap and tip the mower towards the side of the filler neck with the pan

sitting on the ground next to the mower to catch the oil.

sit mower on its side for about 15 minutes and let all the oil drip out.

Tip it back up and fill her up! 18 ounces for small mower engines. 30 Weight Non-detergent oil.

I have a briggs and stratton quicksilver, just got some string stuck round blade and mower stopped turned it on it's side freed string started up and oily smoke coming out of exhaust

Not to worry. When you tipped the mower on its side, oil ran into the exhaust. Allow the engine to run few minutes and it will stop smoking. The B&S engine will put oil in the muffler if tipped to the left, and oil into the carburetor if tipped on the right. The only safe way to tip the engine is where the spark plug is pointed upward.
Don't forget to check your oil level and adjust as necessary.
Good luck!

Change engine oil

Check underneath the mower at the bottom of the engine's crankcase and see if there is a possible plug of any type there. Be sure you lift the mower the correct way when tipping , typically with the control handles going down towards ground...not on its side.

Can't find owners manual for troy built 21''. How do I drain oil from engine.

Not knowing what model number mower you have, there are a couple of possibilities for draining the oil.

Number one: You can tilt the mower back on the handle bar and look at the bottom side of the engine for a drain plug that is easily accessible and unobstructed so that the oil would drain straight into a container with the mower elevated on something high enough to get the container under it. Loosen the plug then put it up on the blocks, saw horses or whatever you are using, get your catch container under it and remove the plug.

Number Two: Start the engine and warm it up for a few minutes to make the oil flow easier. Set it up on a work bench with the oil dipstick tube toward the outer edge of the bench. Line up a catch container on the floor below it and tip the mower over on its side and pour the oil out the dipstick tube into the container. Just use caution not to touch any hot parts of the engine when lifting it up. This is the way Briggs & Stratton recommends changing the oil in their engines which do no have an accessible drain plug.
