The steering gears are striping out. There are two gears that mesh to steer unit.

Why does steering slip turning left?

broken teeth on the steering gear (attached to the steering rod) or the steering plate (the one that turns the wheels) follow the steering rod from the steering wheel down to the frame, if it goes THRU the frame look underneath the lawnmower and youll see which one is messed up, just replace the one that has the broken/worn down teeth, hope this helps

My John Deere SST18 tractor will not turn left or right once I engage the PTO on the mower deck. As soon as I turn the PTO off, the tractor turns just fine. Any ideas/suggestions that I might try to fix...

Some more details would help. Your tractor has a combined electronic and vacuum controlled steering mechanism. Some people have reported your issue just because of a low voltage issue, and replacing the battery fixed it. In other cases there are two micro controller switches under the fender deck on the right side. These switches should both be able to be depressed and "click" and retract with a healthy solid feel. If not replace the switch. There are also 2 vacuum 'pots' and a vacuum system associated with your steering control. A vacuum leak may also be a culprit (although in my head that might be more constant). Does the steering work in reverse?

John Deere LA140 won't turn. New battery. No sound when I turn the key. No headlights, what should I do?

Check your connections at the battery. May have a bad ground or bad battery connection. Also check to make sure new battery is good by supplementing with a jump start. If new battery is good and connections are solid, you most likely have a broken wire somewhere. The lights may only work with the mower running though. I believe on my LA105 the lights only come on with the engine running and dim/brighten with the RPM of the engine.

My john deere L111 riding lawnmower starts fine but after running for 20 minutes, it just shuts down. Will not restart until it cools down. Any suggestion where to look.

I had this same problem with my John Deere LA140. I suspected that it was some sort of fuel delivery problem. Long story short, it turned out to be the gas cap was not venting properly, creating a vacuum in the fuel tank. The temporary fix was to loosen the cap when it starts to die. This relieves the vacuum and allows the gas to flow again. Installing a new cap on the tank fixed the problem.
