Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I own a Toshiba TW56F80 rear projection unit. I've owned it since 1997, and it has served me well. A few months ago, I heard a zap sound from inside the cabinet, and all my remote functions stopped. I can still manually turn the set on and adjust the volume, video inputs etc from the fron panel, but all the advanced features and the full convergence adjustments are no longer available. Is this worth repairing, or should I move on? I really can't afford a new plasma or other type HDTV just yet, and the picture on the Toshiba is still stunning for DVD, and HiRes sources from my media center PC.

Yes. Tried that when it first happened. As I said, I hear a distinct zap from inside the set, and can only assume something shorted or burned out.

Do you hear the zap every time you turn on the set?

Have you tried to unplug the set overnight and see if that resets the television?

Sounds like to me that a HV Arc or a Static discharge has corrupted the eeprom data or caused the Main Micro Processor to lock out those features. Have you unplugged the set for 24hrs? As easy as this sounds it is true that allowing the lower voltages bleed off so the eeprom and micro are able to fully re-set themselves. I doesn't always work but if you have not tried it, try it . That would be a cheap fix. If this does not fix it, parts are going to be tough to get because of the age of the unit. Toshiba may not even manufacture them any more.
Good Luck,

I have a Toshiba TP50G60 Rear-Projection 50" TV. It only stays on for a few seconds and then turns off. I heard this is a common problem for this type of t.v.. Is it a lost cause? If not, what should...

deesturkey,

Your unit was made in 1997. That is going on 14 years of use. While I like to fix all the TVs I can this one is probably going to keep having problems even if you solve this one. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6396176-projection_tv_troubleshooting which will walk you through the troubleshooting process and also tell you where to get any parts you need. Keep in mind though that the unit is very old for a projection TV.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

95% 0f the time when this happens to a toshiba projection or regular set, the power regulator IC is bad. It is a componet that should be replaced by a service technician as there are too many points inside this set that can zap you and hurt you. If thats the only problem your talking in the range of 175 to 250 to repair this set. Good Luck

Toshiba tz50v51 popping sound

Possible problems: * The TV set may be unplugged. * A fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or switched off. * The remote control unit (RCU) may be disabled. Solutions: * Make sure the TV/VCR are plugged in and the wall switch is on. * Check the fuse or circuit breaker. Test the outlet with a lamp. * Replace the RCU's batteries: if this fails exchange the unit.
