thanks guys I think it's gonna be in the carb and fuel because everything else seems to be firing

A engine needs 3 things, Air, Fuel, and Fire. First step unplug the fuel hose from the carb and see if fuel flows out. If not check the fuel filter, hose and tank. If it does then The carb may need cleaning. Start by removing the bowl and see if there is anything at the bottom of it.

thank you Arnie I have changed the battery, plugs, drained the gas. Guess I'll have to tackle the carburator

  • newkens1 May 06, 2014

Check to see if you have spark. If you do then the prblem is fuel related. Modern gasoline contains ethanol which causes problems in the carb by varnish buildup. The tiny orifices clog up and the engine cannot get fuel.

Whydoes theengine start then shuts off

Could be a relay, fuel pump, coil, or other component.
You'll need to find out if you are loosing fuel or spark when it stops running.

Location of fuel pump relay on 2000 toyota corolla

The relay is probably working correctly. It should power the pump for about 3 seconds then stop until the computer sees oil pressure or RPM from the engine.
This is a safety to help prevent a fire in a wreck.
The relay should be in the fuse box in the engine compartment.

My 320i takes longer to start and the engine even sputters at first. When it finally starts, the tail pipe exhausts white smoke.. a lot of it! The emission of white smoke doesn't stop even while the engine...

Your head gasket is leaking and you'll have to take your car to your mechanic, the wihte smoke is coolant leaking into theengine cylinders, check you radiator it's problably low.

Distributor timing set

hmm ok
this will risk serious eletric shock..

start the vehicle
slowly turn the distributor left or right until you get the neat ideling tone and little to no vibration. If you turn it one way the car speeds up
the other way it slows down.. Find a place that you are comfortable with.

BTW some vehicles have the original settings marked, look for a colord(usually red) mark on the distributor and engine just line up these two.
