Hoover troubleshooting

Hello! The umbrella tube is a stationary part, it does not rotate. The dirt that enters in the dirt cup spins around the umbrella tube. If no dirt is entering into the dirt cup this can mean there is a blockage either in your hoses and/or your filters. Try these quick trouble shooting steps below.

1. Remove the dirt cup canister from the vacuum. Twist off the dirt cup lid.
2. Remove the primary foam filter. Hold filter under running water until water runs clear. Allow 24 hours to air dry. If the filter is really dirty it may need to be replaced.
3. Slide the Hepa filter out. Tap the filter against the trash can until dirt stops falling. Replace the Hepa filter. (Do not wash)
4. Remove the hose from both ends. Use a broom stick to gently loosen and clear any clogs from hose.
5. Use a wooden spoon or something similar to loosen and remove any clogs from the lower hose. Hope this helps!

If I have a shaft that is 49.5" long and it is offset .150" side to side what degree is it offset

A total offset of 0.150" is about 0.35 degrees on a length of 49.5". The impact that something being this loose has on a rotating part adds up quickly.
If I knew more about the part & assembly I could give you some advice. You could sleeve the bore or Grind, Chrome & Grind the journals to the proper size, If the 0.150" is from journal damage. If the offset is due to bending you might have to be a little more creative. mpro at cox dot net

Trouble code P1345. please can you tell me what has went bad

p1345 refers to Camshaft to Crankshaft correlation problem.
Could be distributor turned at wrong angle in relation to where it should be:

Camshaft ****** Offset Adjustment NOTE: Ignition timing cannot be adjusted.
  1. With ignition OFF connect scan tool.
  2. Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
  3. Increase engine speed to 1,000 RPM. NOTE: The cam ****** offset reading will not be accurate below 1,000 RPM.
  4. Use scan tool to monitor cam ****** offset.
    • If the cam ****** indicates a value of 0° the distributor is adjusted properly.
    • If the cam ****** does not indicate a value of 0° the distributor must be adjusted.
  5. Use scan tool to monitor cam ****** offset.
  6. With ignition OFF, slightly loosen distributor hold down bolt.
  7. Start engine and raise speed to 1,000 RPM.
  8. Monitor cam ****** offset using a scan tool.
  9. Rotate the distributor as follows;
    • If the reading is negative, rotate the distributor in clockwise direction.
    • If the reading is positive, rotate the distributor in counterclockwise direction.
  10. Rotate the distributor until 0° is obtained.
  11. Turn ignition OFF.
  12. Tighten hold down bolt to 25 ft lb (3 Nm).

How to set timing on 1998 gmc sierra

The v-8's timing is supposed to be 0 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees and is only adjustable if you have a scanner. A timing light does not work on them.
These engines can be "timed" in the way you are used too.
The distibutor housing holds the cam sensor, The PCM calculates the timing by measuring the crank signal and the cam signal.

What you are seting by turning the distibutor housing is the correlation between the 2 sensors. On the V-6 model, the housing holddown bracket is fixed to the housing so if you return the rotor to the proper position when reinstalling the housing, the engine should be at the correct cam sensor position setting.they did not fix the holddown bracket to the V-8 models, it would have saved a lot of headaches.
To set the correlation between the 2, you will need a scan tool that can read camshaft position offset. With the engine RPM over 1200 adjust the offset too 0 degrees.
The ignition timing cannot be adjusted. The distributor may need adjusting to prevent crossfire. To insure proper alignment of the distributor, perform the following:

With the ignition OFF, install a scan tool to the DLC.
Start the engine and bring to normal operating temperature. IMPORTANT: Cam ****** Offset reading will not be accurate below 1000 RPM.
Increase engine speed to 1000 RPM.
Monitor the Cam ****** Offset.
If the Cam ****** indicates a value of 0°+/-2°, the distributor is properly adjusted.
If the Cam ****** does not indicate 0°+/-2°, the distributor must be adjusted.

With the engine OFF, slightly loosen the distributor hold down bolt. IMPORTANT: Cam ****** Offset reading will not be accurate below 1000 RPM.
Start the engine and raise engine speed to 1000 RPM.
Using a scan tool monitor Cam ****** Offset.
Rotate the distributor as follows:
4.1. To compensate for a negative reading, rotate the distributor in the counterclockwise direction.
4.2. To compensate for a positive reading, rotate the distributor in the clockwise direction.

Repeat step 4 until 0°+/-2°, is obtained.
Turn the ignition OFF.
Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt to 3 Nm (25 lb. ft.).
Start the engine, raise engine speed to 1000 RPM and recheck Camshaft ****** Offset.

Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

On new rocker covers there is a rubber gasket to limit flow of oil - on what side of cover does it go on outside or center carb side

I think what you're talking about is the "umbrella" in the center rocker box section. The new umbrella pulls into the rocker box from the bottom side leaving the "umbrella" on the top side of the center section.

The umbrella always lines up with the "head breather ports" in the heads where the large bolts for the air filter element go. Towards the carb side of the head.

Good Luck
