This is one or two things.
HARD DRIVE PROBLEM
This sounds like a bad hard drive. What make of hard drive is in it?
Figure out what brand hard drive it is first. Then go to the website of the manufacturer.
While you are on the site look for software for hard drive repair. It could be listed in many ways. Download the windows version if you have another computer to test this in. If you do not have another computer to test this in you will have to use the Dos version. The instructions will come with the software.
Then you will go through these steps.
Do you have another computer that you can use to check the hard drive? If you have another computer or access to another computer you can download a hard drive utility that can diagnose and possible repair the hard drive. Is it a SATA hard drive? If it is a SATA hard drive you can plug it directly into another computer that has a SATA cable. If it is not SATA you will need to buy a converter so that you can hook it up to the other computer. This will be an external slim hard drive enclosure. A desktop hard drive can be put in another desktop and used as a slave drive. Just make sure that you look at the back of the Hard Drive and make put the jumper on the slave pins. Then you can run the test through the other computer to test the Hard Drive. The test will let you know if the Hard Drive is bad or not. If you can see your files on the drive you might want to back them up before you start the test. If it comes back as good go to the next step.
You can boot it up with the recovery CD and run through it as if you were doing a setup and then when the second repair comes up..... hit repair. This should repair any problem with the operating system. If you want to try the simple way... use the first repair that comes up. When the screen comes up with a blinking curser hit the number 1 then Enter........ When it ask you for a password hit enter. There should not be a password unless someone has put one in it. If there is a password it should be your master password.
Then type fixmbr and hit enter. This will fix your master boot record. If that does not work use the second repair. Sounds complicated but it is not.

OK, Not sure about the Aspire One, But I had the same problem with the Aspire 5610Z.
I simply found the Bios battery and with a small screw driver, created a short circuit of the bios by touching the two leads (just for a couple seconds) from the Bios Battery to the Motherboard. And It Works Fine Now!
Be sure to Disconnect all power from the laptop, and remove the Battery before doing this.
You can do as I did and download a free manual of your laptop which shows you where the bios battery is located.
Good Luck ô¿ô

OMG ... i was completley distraught. i bought my ACER ASPIRE LAPTOP 6months ago when i was trveling in italy ,im in austarlia. I use it torun my online game ; » www.themafiawarz.eu - and has all my files.
When i got the black screen o death i first am here to the boards finding nothing i was further distraught..
I AM HAPPY TO TELL YOU MY FRIENDS, that i am typing this on my lil baby
Heres what you do....
* you need usb disk drive
* a second computer with internet access (can be work cafe friends place)
* a file you can download from acer or search yourself called ZGIA32.zip
Formatyour drive in fat (*note i tried fat as directed in a number of manualsthough then tried fat32 and it worked then though suggest you try fatfirst *shrug)
open zip file and copy 3309.fd and the fla.exe to the usb stick
rename 3309.fd to ZGIA32.fd
Turn off your laptop making sure that both battery and power supply is plugged in and attach the usb stik/drive.
holddown FN and ESC keys and press the power button, continue to fold FNand ESC keys for 7-10 secs then release - at this point the power lightshould be blinking and you should still have the black screen of death.
press the power button once while its blinking - this will initiate a bios update * DO NOT PUSH ANYTHING AFTER THIS
After 2 mins the aspire should reboot itself , wait for about 7mins if it dosent before rebooting manually
Took me three attempts as i just wasent doing something right though TA DA!!!!!
and i still have my files. yeah team take this and run, hope you havent spent money yet
