go to home depot and buy a replacement heater
it might be posible to rent a water heater from the local electric co and they will install it for free and charge you 12-15 per month for the heater saves money and saves cash for install
if it breaks they replace it same for gas heater let them dicker arround wit the heater and pull there hair out somtimes it is beter to rent than to buy also you can get a biger heater if you want they usualy will suply a larger unit at the same price if it will fit in your space

Water meter is ticking away. No sign of water or

If you have a gas hot water heater, water may be dripping onto the baffle plate at the bottom and vaporizing whenever the burner fires. There would be no evidence of water under the heater in this case. Yes, I speak from experience. Also check exterior sill cocks for leakage as one might be open just a tiny bit. If you wait for freezing weather, a leaky sill cock will grow a "beard" of ice.

My water heater heats everything except my lower shower

Let's walk our way thru this one: I assume you have an upstairs shower, and a downstairs shower?-- Are you able to follow the pipes coming out of the Hot Water Heater?-- Can you trace where the pipes to the upstairs shower go?-- And what about the pipes to the lower shower? -- Do they BOTH come off the HOT water pipes coming out of the top of the HW Heater?
A big help in tracing pipes, is by having the hot water run in the Shower that is getting HOT water-- Feel the HOT! pipe?-- Now-- shut that water off, and go to the lower shower-- When it is running, can you hear water flowing out of the pipes at the top of the Hot Water Tanks?-- or do you feel Cold water moving-- Can you travels where it is flowing from? Get back with me, and tell me what you are feeling, and hearing-- Mack B

NO HOT WATER

If you have a gas w/heater you will hear it come on when the hot water is being used. If it is an electric water heater you will not hear it come on when hot water is being used. You need to check if someone turned the shut off valve on top of the heater off. It may be a simple as that.

Water was coming from the top of my water heater and I want to know if it need to be replaced or can it be repaired?

Hello Marcia

Unit is probably rusted out:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

Reliance is AO Smith. I recommend the AO Smith line-up of water heater brands as best because air intake screen is located on bottom of unit and can be cleaned by homeowner without removing combustion parts, and because AO Smith posts service manuals.

Doesn't always come on with hot water is turned on

Water heaters draw water into the bottom, and as the hot water heats, it rises and hot water exits from the top.
You might want to check each fixture, does the hot pipe (tubing)feel warm when you run it for a moment. Can you get warm water from some of the fixtures, but not others?
I'm bet there is a leak at the top of the intake which is filling from the top down, instead of bottom up.

Running out of hot water after 10-15 minutes. already changed the bottom element and theromstat and still missing hot hot??

Is the upper element working?
The cold water comes in at the top inlet and there is a tube inside the water heater which takes the water to the bottom. If this tube breaks off the cold water will mix with the hot water on the top and you'll have less hot water. You can take it out and inspect or replace it.

Is the lower element suppose to have two legs of 120 to it? Or do i need to move a wire up top to make it 240? as it is on top element.

You have water heater with two elements.
Two-element water heaters are 240Volts.

1) Lets talk about what makes a 240Volt circuit
See basic water heater circuit:
http://waterheatertimer.org/B220C.html

Open link, and illustration at top of page is your water heater circuit

Notice that two insulated wires come from the circuit breaker and go to the water heater.
These two wires are 120volt each. When these two 120Volt wires combine, they create 240Volts
These are called hot wires because they come from the hot busbars.
There is also a bare copper wire that comes from neutral busbar.
The bare copper wire is a safeguard, and is not necessary for the 240V circuit to work.

Inside each circuit breaker box is 1 neutral busbar, and 2 hot busbars.
Open image below, and it shows typical residential breaker box
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Inside-Main-Breaker-Box-420.jpg

In a residential home, each circuit takes two wires to complete the circuit.
For 120Volt circuit, you need 1 neutral wire and 1 hot wire to complete the circuit. These are usually a black and white wire. The bare copper wire is a safeguard.
For 240Volt circuit, you need 2 hot wires to complete the circuit, and each hot wire comes off a different busbar. These can be a black and white wire, and sometimes a black and red wire. The bare copper wire is a safeguard.

With a 240Volt water heater the two hot wires connect to the black and red wires located on top of water heater.

2) Let's talk about wiring inside a water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/WH-w-combined-530.jpg

Open image on link above, and it shows your 240volt water heater wiring.
The 2 hot wires from breaker box connect to the red and black wires on top of heater.
Inside each water heater, the wires are color-coded and will appear the same, or nearly the same, as shown on link above.
As long as your wiring appears like the image, and the hot wires from breaker box connect correctly, and the circuit breaker is working fine, then your water heater will work.

Add a comment any time.

Hot water comes out cold side for few seconds and gets cold, no hot from hot side, only cold

Make sure that the water pipes for the cold water coming in and the hot water going out are connected to the correct positions on the water heater. If the connections get reversed, the water that is supposed to be hot will be drawn from the bottom of the tank and will not be as hot as it should be. The cold water input goes to the bottom of the tank. The hot water out comes from the top of the tank.
