The recovery on my Toashiba Satellite A130/A135 doesn't work

I ran the recovery on my Toshiba Satellite A130/A135 Series from the cd's supplied with the machine. The whole recovery process appeared to complete but Windows will not start up. As it attempts to start up I get a bar running on the bottom of the screen with the word Windows under it and then it freezes.

Please Help,

I left it hanging 10 minutes and when nothing happened I shut the computer down. I then did the full recovery and the process seemed to complete totally again. I got the same results. I left the screen hanging 30 minutes and when nothing changed I shut it down.

I can't get the machine to boot up into safe mode. How do you do a system restore?

  • terri_sulliv Jun 22, 2009

Unfortunately, the computer wouldn't boot up in safe mode. I got an error message saying I needed to complete the windows instalation. I used both recovery disks before for a successful recovery but no luck. Could there be a damaged sector on the recovery disk and I just need tto get new ones??

I did a total format of the hard drive, which took 9 hours to complete. I put in the recovery CD's. It ran through both of them, ejected the 2nd and asked me to put in the next disk to complete the process. There are only 2 disks. I did the recovery again with the 2 disks and this time I got the same results as before the total reformatting, it hung up while trying to reboot at a screen with the words "Microsoft Corporation" at the bottom of the screen. Could damage to my recovery disks be causing this? I can see some scratches on the second disk.

    Please Help

Try to boot the machine in safe mode by pressing F8 as the computer starts up, if will let you boot into safe mode as it sounds like there could be some bad sectors on the drive causing it to hang on boot.
To check this right click on the C drive and select "properties", then select "tools" tab, in the tools option check the volume for errors.
This can take some time to perform so please be patient.

If you can't get the machine to boot into safe mode please post back

Its possible that the recovery went bad for some reason so you are going to have to use the recovery CD again and reinstall the operation system, make sure the disk is clean!!

When the installer gets to the screen where it asks you which drive to install the operating system on make sure you delete that partition and format it first before you proceed with the recovery, this will rewrite the master boot record so there should be no more initial boot problems.
Make sure anything that is attached to the computer is disconnected for example printers, USB pen drives and externals as it could hinder the recovery process.

Please post back if you need anymore advice.

    Good luck

Chances are there is a bad sector on the hard drive itself as it told you that the original recovery was successful, like i said in my last post perform the recovery again but make sure you format the hard drive first before you continue with the recovery, there will be onscreen instructions for you to follow to do this, also make sure the lens on the CD/DVD is clean and free of dust.

Instead of doing an automated recovery, try system restore. This helps when automated recovery cannot find a solution

As leecom72 said, keep pressing F8 once you see the dos screen. Keep hitting until you get something called Advanced Boot Options. There you'll have an option called Safe Mode. Do not choose any other safemode, select the one that states just Safe Mode. If your PC goes into windows successfully, go to start->programs->accessories->system tools->system restore.
Select the option for restore and choose a date that is atleast a couple of days older. Click next and proceed until the system logs off and initiates a system restore sequence. Please report back if you still have problems. Happy to help

Try to get a friend's disc for the recovery purpose. Are you trying to recover from a recovery disc or a bootable installation disc? If nothing turns out well, it is advisable to go for a clean install of the OS. But unfortunately you'll lose all data on the drive upon a clean install.

  • Amruth Louis Jun 23, 2009

Yup. You figured it right. There must be a problem with the discs. And for this reason I make 2 copies of all my recovery discs. You can borrow your friend's discs for the purpose. Check if any of your friends have the same model and try the discs. If you cant find a friend with the discs, we'll google for it.

Is your notebook warranty still valid? Coz I read very poor reports online.
And if you can afford some money, there are recovery discs available online. - 13.95$ -12.95$

Also the site where I read bad about it says the recovery discs are of no use. You better go for a cooling base, instead of paying for the discs.
If you're willing to read the bad reviews, check

Cant find CD key for toshiba satellite A130 /A135 . how do i get key?

I think you mean the key to access windows vista home basic. The key should be located on the back of you laptop near some bar codes it should be 25 caracters long like XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

You can be sneaky:
Download a nifty program called the "ProductKeyFinder" it should be free. Run it on your friend's computer with the EXACT SAME operating system and and copy down his key. If you get in trouble that's too bad.

I have Toashiba laptop Satellite A135-S2276. The laptop doesn?t recognize my USB flash drive. Apparently the device was detected by Windows because as soon as I plugged it in, a balloon pooped up and it...

Check it on another computer. if it still doesnt work then your backup is gone. if it does work maybe you should take it in. also try other accessories in that same port. if other stuff doesnt work then you'll probably need to fix the port. also check the drive on any USB ports in the back of you pc.
