SOURCE: how do you remove agitator

Hi. The agitator is fastened to the agitator shaft and its movement is driven either by splines or a simple clutch assembly, which is removable as well. The splines are usually plastic or rubber nubs on a cylinder that fits over the agitator shaft. If the nubs wear down, the shaft will not turn properly or it will turn weakly. If the agitator is moving in only one direction, the likely cause is the clutch assembly. The clutch has dogs that depress and pop up with each turn. If those dogs are worn, they will not engage properly and the agitator will turn only in one direction.

Various makes and models differ in how the agitator is removed. In some newer models, the agitator just lifts straight up and out. However, in most models you will have to preform a combination of the following steps. First remove the fabric softener dispenser, if any. It should either lift or screw off. Next remove the cap. It may lift off, screw off or failing that, it may need to be pried off.

Beneath the cap some agitators are secured in place by a bolt. Use a socket wrench with an extension to remove that bolt. Some Maytag's may have a screw near to the bottom of the agitator post that must be removed. Now try to lift the agitator straight up, possibly with a little back and forth rocking motion. Use caution when pulling, the agitator may come loose suddenly and hit you in the face or send you flying backward.

If the agitator is particularly stubborn, you can loop some rope under one side of the agitator at the bottom and then up over a broom handle. Now loop it again under the other side of the agitator and back up to the broom. Brace one end of the broom handle against the top of the washer and lift up on the other end. Double check that you have removed anything that may be securing the agitator in place. Do not use too much force or you may damage the washer cabinet, agitator or injure yourself.

The Hot Point washing machine has stopped agitating but does spin-what is wrong?

Hello,

The most usualthing wrong when the Hotpoint brand washer doesn't agaitate is a stripped agitater coupler,i don't see a model number in your question so i don't know if yours uses that coupler but its by far the leading thing wrong with that problem.

This youtube video will show ya how to replace that coupler, watch it and take off your agitator to see if that's the problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N26MCQKuXn0

All cycles on my washing machine work, but machine will not agitate. What are possible solutions to fix the issue? It is a Hotpoint, top load, model # is vvsr1070daww

Hello,

The most probable thing causing it to not agitate is going to be stripped/broken agaitator coupler.
The video will show you to take out the agitator and check for a defective agaitator coupler

I have a HotPoint washer (VBXR1090D) and it stopped agitating. It still spins, and everything else, just doesn't agitate.

Hello,

Do you here the motor running on the agitation cycle yet it doesn't agitate? If so the agitator coupling is the problem.I have included a youtube video that will show you step by step how to repacle the coupling. The part number in the title of the video(WH49X10042) is the part number that you would need(Hotpoint is made by GE) it could be ordered by simply googling that part number

here is the lik for that video http://youtu.be/N26MCQKuXn0

I hope this helps and if it does please give me 4 thumbs up

My washer makes a terrible screeching sound when it starts agitating for the wash cycle. what could this be? it is a Hotpoint, model wlw2500b

Hi this sounds like the clutch assembly, this model is fairly old, you would probably be better off getting a new washer.

My GE Hotpoint VBXR1070W0WW stopped spinning. When I opened it the belt was very loose but it does not look worn at all. Is it the belt or probably something else?

Either the belt has stretched or the motor bracket has slipped (if adjustable). If the bracket is adjustable (like on a car alternator) you can just adjust out the slack and retighten, but if not then you must replace the belt.

Removing the Agitator on a G157 Hotpoint washing machine

Some models have a bolt towards the bottom of the outside of the agitator, depending on model. If it has one, take out out and you'll have to yank on it VERY hard to get of off (you'll most likely lift the machine off of the ground a few times in the process!)

If the bolt isn't there, its under the top cap of the agitator "somewhere". You'll still have to yank up on the silly thing to get it off after taking the bolt out.

Good luck!

Hotpoint washer

Two types of Hotpoints had two different ways of removing the agitator. One had a pop off top that when you removed it, you can remove the center bolt, the remove the agitator. Another one you had to put your fingers under the agitator and pull straight up to unclip the agitator. Good Luck!!! Jim
