Question about Intel (P42000400512SK478) Pentium 4, 2 GHz Processor

1 Answer

My Pentium 4 2.4 GHz processor is running at only 1.9 GHz. The bus, supposed to be running at 800MHz, is running at 398. The motherboard is Dell Optiplex GX260. Can someone please help me speed up my processor?

There are no advanced settings on my BIOS. Here are the specs:

    CPU Info-

    Hyperthreading -Disabled (option to enable)

CPU Speed -Normal (option for compatible, but says its slower)

Bus Speed - 400 MHz (can't change the rest of these)

    Processor ID- F29

    Clock Speed 1.2 GHz

    Cache Size 512 MB

    Memory info-

Installed Memory -512 MB DDR SDRAM

    System Memory Speed -266 MHz

    AGP Aperture 128 MB

The Bios version is A09, and I've also updated the chipset (845G)drivers.

Do I need to set jumpers or something?

I enabled hyperthreading, and Windows installed the new hardware. Still don't have any advanced settings in bios, and still shows running at half speed, but I can tell it's running much faster now. Thanks !!!

In the BIOS-setup, normally you can adapt the bus speed. as it's running at about 400mhz, i suppose it's set to auto. within the advanced system settings, you should be able to set the bus config to manual and then you can choose the appropriate bus speed below.

start with enabling hyperthreading, saving and returning to the BIOS. there will probably be more options to adapt, such as the CPU speed and bus speed...

Required Intel SL9CB Pentium, 3 GHz compatible motherboard

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Pentium_4_microprocessors#Prescott_.2890.C2.A0nm.29

Pentium 4 HT, Model 531. sSpec number SL9CB.

OK. So far I know you need a motherboard that has an LGA 775 processor socket; needs to support Intel processors that are Single-Core, and with an 800MegaHertz Front Side Bus.
(800MHz FSB)

Ram Memory? Dunno. K
Do know the rule of thumb is, that the Ram Memory typically operates at Half of the processor's FSB.
Therefore can only assume the ram memory is DDR Sdram, and operates at 400MHz. (PC-3200)

You haven't stated the motherboard chipset that was used, OR what computer manufacturer, and model number; this mobo came out of.
(MOtherBOard)

Also didn't state if you are using a graphics card, and what kind it is.
(PCI, AGP, or PCI Express)

This isn't a 'guess-ti-mate'. Exact specifications are required in order to replace the motherboard.
Otherwise you may not be able to reuse the Ram Memory, or graphics card. (IF used)

Awaiting needed information. Post back in a Comment.

Can u explain the growth of the pentium processor with respect to the pentium pro, pentium II, pentium III, pentium 4 and the pentiuim 5

the prcessory varies with clock speed and the speed for example a pentium 1 processor has a spped of 100mmx with aclock speed just 66mhz now the pentium 4 processor uses a spped of 3.0 ghz with a clock speed of 800mhz so there is deferance as the clock speed increase the speed of the computer increases

Can i up grade my single core cpu pen4 550 3,4GHz to a Quad core or dual core either one would help

Depends on the socket type.. Socket 423 and 478 do not support core duo or quad core processor types. However, if you have LGA 775 (aka socket T) your motherboard will support the following:
Intel Pentium 4 (2.60 - 3.80 GHz)
Intel Celeron D (2.53 - 3.60 GHz )
Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
Intel Pentium D (2.66 - 3.60 GHz)
Pentium Extreme Edition (3.20 - 3.73 GHz)
Pentium Dual-Core (1.40 - 3.33 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Duo (1.60 - 3.33 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Extreme (2.66 - 3.20 GHz)
Intel Core 2 Quad (2.33 - 3.00 GHz)
Intel Xeon (1.86-3.40 GHz)
Intel Celeron (1.60 - 2.40 GHz)

What is the maximum limit of Processor my OPTIPLEX GX26- can support? i have currently 2.4ghz processor working and i want to now what is the max limit i can upgrade it to, can i place intel core duo?

Sorry, the GX260 can not support a intel core duo. The processor sockets do not match the motherboard.

Also, it can handle any pentium 4 processor that uses an 800MHz bus speed, because the highest bus speed that the GX260 motherboard supports is 533 MHz. The fastest processor available for the GX260 is 2.6 GHz.

I bought a pentium 4 3.0 ghz 800 mhz & my

The motherboard chipset of the Dell Dimension 2300 Desktop PC, will not support a processor with an 800MHz Front Side Bus frequency rate.

Only Intel Pentium 4's that use a Socket 478, 1.75 Volts, and a maximum of a 400MHz FSB.

The Intel Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz processor has an 800MHz FSB, (As you have already stated), and uses 1.475 to 1.55 Volts.

The motherboard chipset for that Dell Dimension 2300, is an Intel 845GL.

This list on Wikipedia, shows you parameters the Intel 845GL chipset supports,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_Chipsets

Not a good outcome, sorry. Just stating the facts.

This motherboard supports the latest Pentium 4 CPU from Intel in LGA775 package. With 800MHz FSB, 1 MB L2 cache, Hyper-Threading Technology and core-speeds up to 3.6GHz and beyond, Intel's LGA775 Pentium 4 is one of the fastest desktop processors to date.
make sure your cpu has a 800mhz fsb
