I have a Philips 615 DVD recorder that has worked wonderfully since I got it in 2005. However, this weekend it decided to stop reading any DVD put into the tray. I was recording something and finalized it. However it seemed to get stuck during the finalization. When I took the DVD out and put it back in, it said it was blank. Now no DVDs are being read. It scans, but always comes up with no disc. Is it the DVD drive and can I replace it?

Sometimes a blank DVD will not be the proper format. Upgrades have been done to DVD-R disks, and your recorder might not recognize the upgraded format on the newer disks. This has happened with Philips, Emerson machines- they all use a Funai burner. I have found with my FUNAI/Philips/Emerson recorder that purchasing the Philips, 1-16 speed DVD-R blank disks fixes this problem on my 2 machines. If you have an older DVD-RW 2 speed disk, it should work as well.

Put the DVD back into the drive...Then open the DVD menu by selecting the first tittle on the disc....Hold down the up arrow on the remote to make the "Editing menu" appear....Then select "Finalize Disc".

These instructions can be found on page 54 of the instruction book.

SOURCE: DVD recording problems

I have the same unit with the same exact problem. I ended up taking it in for repair and it's now working perfectly. I paid $100 for the repair. I dropped the unit off and picked it up myself. I think $30 additional is charged for shipping and handling in US.

jamesgranger - I think your DVD recorder is still having trouble reading the DVD+RW. It should not have a problem using a DVD+RW many times. Try taking the DVD+RW and put it in your computer. Find it in Explorer, right-click and choose "Erase". Then try to record to it using the DVD recorder again. If it works, you can use this to record, though it might be a pain.

The fact that your machine will record to the +R means that it works. Failing to work (record or erase) on the +RW means it's not reading it well. I would try running the lens cleaner again if it were mine. Also, I would make sure that the unit didn't have a lot of dust in it. If you can, power it off and use some spray-air to be sure there's no dust. You may have cleaned the lens, but if there's a lot of dust inside the unit, it will quickly find it's way back to the lens and you'll have the same problem. Michael

I have a dvdr3380 lately when i put in disc it says disc unrecord

Test the created DVD with TMPGEnc v4.0 Xpress here is the free trial link It has a read source function that will fail if the DVDR has not been authored correctly.

If this works and scans in the full DVDR then I suggested that you buy a branded DVD+R like Philips who created the format, if this still fails I think you DVDR 3380 will need a service.

I've purchased a philips dvd videoplayer, dvp3350v/05, with the aim of being able to copy from video to dvd...having read the manual though, it reads like the only copying it will do is from dvd to...

The DVP3350V/05 is a DVD player / Video recorder combi, so will only play DVDs, not record on to them.

You will need a Philips DVDR3510V or DVDR3512V, to record from VHS to DVD.

www.cheapestelectrical.co.uk should have them in stock, if not contact them for availability.

Also, most pre-recorded VHS tapes are copy protected, so you may experience picture rolling and colour fading in & out on any copies you make.
Any VHS tapes you have recorded yourself will not have this copy protection, and will copy ok.
