1 Answer

What is wrong with scag freedom z when it cranks you mow the lawn switch it off to cool, when you try to start again it just clicks? If you leave it alone for a day or two and try it again it cranks right up. I have replaced battery and solenoid switch.

Clicking sounds like it is coming from the bottom of carburetor. Two wires attached one ground wire and one green wire. Ant ideas??

  • curtis chappel May 11, 2014

The carburetor shouldn't do anything like that. I think it maybe the starter. Check all wire connections make sure there tight.

Ok I have taken handle switches off and put them back on. Took battery connection off put back on and it cranked. Ran a little while turned it off then wouldn't crank again. It seems that when you take the battery connection off and put it back on it reboots everything and it will crank. It has been raining so haven't got to mow with it to see it f it will crank after getting hot then trying to recrank.

What is wrong when a Scag freedom z will not crank replaced battery and solenoid switch it ran and cut the yard switched off now will not crank. Clicking noise coming from the bottom of carburator. Two...

Recheck your connection at the battery and the solenoid. The clicking noise is probably the solenoid. The starter may have a shorted out field coil or armature. This will cause a starter crank over sometimes but it will have a bad spot where it will not crank. Check connection at starter as well.

My freedom z will not start

1. Be sure the fuel shutoff valve, located behind the
operator's seat, is completely open.
2. Sit in the operator's seat, fasten seat belt and place
the steering control levers in the neutral position.
3. Engage the parking brake.
4. Place the PTO switch in the disengaged position.
5. If the engine is cold, choke the engine as needed.
6. Move the engine throttle control to about half engine
speed.
7. Turn the ignition key to the START position and
release the key as soon as the engine starts. Do
not hold the key in the START position for more
than 15 seconds at a time. Allow at least 60
seconds between each cranking attempt to prevent
overheating of the starter motor. Prolonged cranking
can damage the starter motor and shorten battery
life.
8. Allow engine to warm before operating the mower.

Won't start

The click means the starter solenoid is acting. Most starters are like GM autos where this solenoid is on the starter. Often heat adversely effects these parts. Try tapping the solenoid and try to start it. If that works then a rebuild is indicated.

A couple of possibilities, either the main fuse has blown, they are normally an auto motive design and located undrt the the hood of the machine, or the start solinoid has burnt out.
