I get past the Gateway logo and make it to the error message saying Windows failed to start. It suggests Windows files were damaged or corrupted and recommends to use startup repair. It offers me two options: Launch startup repair, or start windows normally. Additionally, sometimes there's a countdown where upon 0 it launches startup repair. If I use the arrow keys to change options during the countdown, the text is suddenly replaced with boxes and is unreadable. Anyway, either option I choose and press Enter, it proceeds to a blank black screen and is unresponsive from there. I'm forced to shutdown with the power button.

- I checked out ubuntu but I was able to solve my problem using the Memory Diagnostic Tool on the operating system disk. I can now access my files and stuff.
go to www.ubuntu.com download the cd image that is suitable for your laptop but USE THE VERSION 8 NOT 9
burn it
star your computer with the cd inserted
when ubuntu is loaded verify if you can browse your hdd if not your hdd is toasted
if yoes you will need to use your recovery disk that came with your laptop but WARNING YOUR RECOVERY DISK IS DATA DESTRUCTIVE
if you dont have your recovery disk use any windows install cd (xp , vista or se7en)
go to http://www.gateway.com/worldwide/ to get your new driver
of your hdd is toasted buy a new one and go to a pc shop to make it replaced

When downloading a file with a PC and AOL, I first get Download Manager and save to a folder. Then a Download Continuation Window appears with options to Open, Find, or Close. Trying to Open (or any other option) brings up the hour glass. Trying to close the e-mail or any other window gets the hour glass, as well. I must restart and go to the saved downloaded file. Or, I can minimize and the go to the file. What can I do to Open the file immediately after downloading -- without getting the hour glass?

Gateway 450ROG SN: 0031598515 powers up only intermitently after many attempts. I hear a single click, power lights flash and then almost immediately another single click and it try all over again. Sometimes well into the boot cycle, sometimes immediate. Same issue when starting using a Linux boot CD, with and without battery, different power adapters, etc so not a software issue. Sometimes after many such attempts it will start and if I don't touch or move the laptop it will run for days using remote laptop and mouse. Is there a internal power supply that can be replaced or is this just a motherboard replacement issue? Thanks for you help, Dennis
