Sparks in microwave/convection oven

Sparks started to appear in my microwave.convection oven. A silver powder residue started to come of a plate inside the oven that is held by a screw.

Is there a product I can apply to seal it again. The interior is stainless steel.

Thank you

It sound like the antenna behind the plastic plate may be warped and touching the cavity. From my experience when they start shooting sparks it is time for a new microwave.

Microwave sparks

If it sparks inside the oven then look inside for any powder paint missing... if so discard. If you has metal shelves or tin foil then don't put metal in when on microwave setting. Some of these metal shelves are for a microwave that is also a convection oven but only in the convection oven setting.

Sparks are coming from behind the little revovable plate inside the oven.

these covers are made of a mica material; and tend to get grease-soaked from food splatter. this is where the microwaves pass through. if cover is burned, you will need to replace and clean greasy mess underneath. hopefully, the magnetron is not damaged.

I worked for a place that repairs appliances and rule of thumb is if a microwave sparks dont bother trying to fix it just replace it.Microwaves work with so many watts sparks could mean a resister is shot witch could be very dangerous and if it stopped functioning thats probably the case.

Usually the sparks are from exposed metal. Clean the oven, and the table and anything else you can inside. Then just try nuking a cup of water. That gives it something to work with and it won;t make any sparks itself. Then just see if the sparks are gone. If the paint has come off inside the cavity and exposed some metal you can get sparks but that usually means replacing the microwave. If its caused by an object or buildup then a good cleaning stops it.

The magnetron tube which makes the microwaves is behind that cover plate, and it has gone bad. It is a replaceable part, but it's not worth the cost. Part and labor would be more than a new oven. It's time to treat yourself to a new oven.

Hi There!
Check behind the "Wave Guide Cover" on the inside cavity. There may be moisture or food residue behind it. Should be a cover that is plastic or Mica. Really strange that it's sparking being new. Also check that you use plates without gold or silver trimmings (Crockery or porcelein). This will also cause sparking. Remember that microwaves will always go to the first organic source in its path. The wave guide cover, if soiled, is very close to the tip of the Magnetron and will therefor result in arcing. Sparks when in use

Sonja, I'm not sure what hinges you're speaking about. If you are referring to the bumpers on the ends of the wire racks that are used for convection...move the racks away from the wall. Generally, you should not have anything metal in the unit when it is just microwaving....they are for convection use. You will not start a fire but you will shorten the life of the magnetron if you continue to allow the sparking condition.
