Question about Maytag Dryers

2 Answers

My Maytag Neptune Dryer (Electric), model MDE5500AZW was working fine until this evening. A load of clothes was drying when there was a loud sound that came from our laundry room and the dryer quit. There is power to the machine and the console lights illuminate. When I press ''Start'' nothing happnes. I emptied out the clothes and tried to manually spin the drum. It would not rotate. Any suggestions? There was a drum bolt that had backed out a year or so ago but I tightened it.

The last time I used this site was to repair my Maytag Neptune dryer. There were detailed instructions on how to open the top of them machne up to get access to the drum. To check for an obstruction, I will need to open it up again. I cannot seem to find the instructions on this site now. Can you direct me to the instructions or re-post the instructions? Thanks.

HERE Are all the expanded views of the dryer that might jog your memory.

the top cover is fastened by spring like tabs on the machine rear. thefront edge of the top merely clips to the front panel. the top needs tobe removed to gain access to the bolts that hold the front panel on.these are inside the top corners of the machine. once these are out,the front cover should just pull up to remove. there may be a lightconnection and the door switch wires here too.

Thanks for using FixYa!

Either it got clogged and all sort of stuff, OR you may have used the wrong process... but when you took out the clothes and tried to spin it manually, it would not spin, right? so maybe the reason that something got "stuck" and caused the dryer to stop spinning. Check if there are any obstacles in it... hope that helped!

make sure the vent system is clean. any restrictions can cause the safety switches to activate and turn off heaters. When it cools, the switch resets and starts heating. Unit will continue to cycle the heat off and on. Make sure all elements are working.

need to check your vent duct. if clogged it won't let the air flow through the dryer needed to dry your clothes.

Dryer doesnt dry clothes

I suspect you have a blocked air vent. A blocked vent will definitely extend your drying time. You may even find yourself having to run a load twice to get it fully dried. One way to confirm this is to disconnect the vent hose from the back of your dryer and dry one load with the machine venting directly into your laundry room. If that load dries quickly then you know the problem is a blocked vent. Most vents get blocked by lint near their exit to the outside. There's usually a screen at this location to prevent small animals from crawling into your house. Often this screen gets clogged with lint. Most vents are designed to allow removal and cleaning of this screen from the outside.

a bearing in the back for your drum sounds like what you describe. It needs to be taken apart and the bearing lubricated with high temp grease

the wire my be off the sensor , but when you say it worked after cleaning vent makes me think the vent needs more cleaning, the dryer is designed to run until the clothes are dry if that takes 4 days it will run 4 days, if the vent is not good it cant dry, remove the vent and run a load see what happens with out any vent on it
