can get to bios, get to boot, arrow next to cd rom, but can not move to priority boot

  • Loughlan May 11, 2010

Do you mean that you cannot get into the bios or that you cannot set the bios to start off CD?

  • chrisbock May 11, 2010

Can you access the bios if so put the cd rom 1st in the boot priority then save and exit. it should then boot right from your cd rom drive.

In order to access the bios, press F2 on startup (prior to reaching the windows start screen)

Try pgup/pgdn or + or - when you see have the boot priority option specified.

It also usually gives options at the bottom of the screen saying what are valid keyboard options.

Ensure the disk and ROM compatibility.
check the CD/DVD in other drive and vice versa (another CD/DVD in PC CD/DVD ROM.
then ensure the booting sequence in BIOS setup. if every thing is ok and fine then the problem is with your CD/DVD ROM.

vote me if found helpful.

I am trying to re-install windows xp on a DELL dimension 8300 but it does'nt boot it can go to the BIOS and everything but it say Boot.mgr is missing

You should use the bootable Windows XP CD to start the installation.
To do that, you must first enter the BIOS in the Boot Options select the DVD drive as first (so that it will boot from CD/DVD first, instead of the hard disk). Save and Exit, insert the bootable Windows XP CD in the drive and when prompted to do so, "press any key to boot from CD-Rom".
Hope the above helps.

HELP

ok
For that check in bios that first boot device is your cd or dvd rom.

When you power up the computer pressF2 or "del" key to enter in bios then go to boot option then set first boot device as your cd or dvd rom then save settings then exit.
then check.
Also you can boot your cd or dvd with F12 key
Press F12 when you power up then select your cd or dvd for boot.

Please rate solution if it helps you.
Thanks for using fixya.

You're probably looking for "F12", or less likely the "Escape" key. It doesn't hurt to press it a few times, since the window of opportunity can be pretty short sometimes. Obviously if you see the Windows (I assume) logo, you've gone too far.

Dell Dimension 8300 - Can't Boot from XP Disk

When in doubt do without, that is remove the new hard drive cable and power, remove the DVD drive and try loading booting the XP from just this CD device. Enter the BIOS and check if the system sees the device. If it's not found in the BIOS then you'll never boot anything. Address it as the Primary device on the cable (I don't use CS) and see if the BIOS sees it.
If you get CD device seen in the BIOS then try to boot the CD in it. If it boots then power off and connect up your 40gb drive (optioned as Primary) on the other cable. Now power on as check the BIOS for the drive and the DVD device. If both are seen then boot the cd and try to load XP. After it's up and running install the other CD device as a Slave on one of the cables.

NOT DETECTING CD ROM

Hi,

Although the BIOS in this old machine has a boot from cd option, it is quite possible the DVDrom drive simply doesn't support the feature. Many P2 machines were like that. Chances are you will need a bootable DOS/WIN95/WIN98 floopy which will allow you to get it running with a CD driver.

Once you have this accomplished you can simply use the command prompt with cd support boot option and use the command prompt to load the installer on the CD. Once it finishes it's initial setup it will be able to use the cd drive for everything BUT booting.

Hope this Helps FixYa,

Chris

My dell optiplex does not boot and when i try to reinstall it wont boot from cd

I wonder what error message you're getting.
Click here to enter your service tag and to find out if your PC is under warranty. If it is then call Dell and your're good to go.
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?c=us&l=en&s=gen
Run the on-board diagnostics: (essentially F12)
http://www.mss.net/Links/DellDocs/OptiGX260/UserGuide/advtshoo.htm
If it's not making it to the Windows splash screen then this should lead you in the right direction. If you have decided to reinstall and are booting with the OS CD-Rom, but it's not booting you will need to adjust the boot order to include the CD-Rom in the BIOS.
