Question about Televison & Video
I have a Sony Trinitron, cant remember what year (90's). Sound is working, but the picture fails in two ways: either it doesn't come on at all when the standby lamp flashes continuously, or when it does come on, horizontal lines begin to distort the images as the picture decreases in width and height gradually towards a single straight white line across the middle of the screen. At this point the screen goes blank (as if it was off).
I am still looking for an answer but I thought I'd drop this in: if it's on its last legs and you aren't keeping the thing anyway, I hit it over the top with a hammer fist of varying strengths when the picture begins its series of steps toward failure. Usually, the vibrations from the TV being smacked realign whatever connection is loose and can reset itself to normal. Be quick though! This only works if you notice the picture dying out as I described. Once it goes to the blank screen, you have to turn it off (give it a smack) and start again. Ive been taking my chances with the thing for about 6 months now, and its still working.
Also I noticed: once the TV's warmed up from use it usually stays on without failing. It takes more effort to turn it on in the morning when it hasnt been used all night. Once you get'er goin, she'll hold for a reasonable amount of time.
You are probably dealing with loose solder connections in the horizontal and vertical deflection circuits. I am surprised it hasn't failed in a massive way yet. Too many times that is the way it ends unless those solder connections are taken care of.
Hope this helps,
