Acer Aspire One XP startup error

Hi, I'm having the exact same problem as the 1st poster. File is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System32\Config\System

the problem with that is even though the BIOS has a boot from USB CDROM option, it doesn't work.

    Very odd...
It looks like you're still trying to boot off the hard disk inside the unit, rather than the CD.

Alternatively, you HAVE set it correctly to boot off the cd, but the cd that has been inserted is not bootable.

Try another bootable CD (E.G. official windows xp installation CD)

If the laptop has a floppy drive get a bootable win 98 disk. insert disk first then turn on comp. run w/o cr rom support. at command prompt type "fdisk MBR" hit enter remove disk and reboot. if still bad insert win XP disk and do the second repair not the first one let it run its course. if not well you will have to reimage the comp

Thanks guys for the response. I've tried using a proven BART cd. So that disc is bootable, when I put the hd back in, I'll try a XP disc too.

Thanks for the response guys. The CD I tried was a bart cd which is proven to be bootable. Another interesting fact, the USB cdrom drive does not show up on the F12 Boot Menu. Could be because it doesn't like the bart disc. When I put the hd back in, I'll use a xp disc. We'll see.

That's the 1st time out of a few hundred pc's where the bart cd wouldn't boot. XP disc is working. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks Chris for replying. I took your advice and was able to boot from the hard drive's restore volume. The registry was corrupted too. The 2nd repair installation option fixed that issue.
    Thanks again.

All I am getting on a aspire one net-book is windows\system32\config\system error please help as I tried the alt F10 couldn't get it to work

The first step in recovering from this problem is to boot into the Recovery Console and replace the missing or damaged system file with a backup copy. To do this, you will need an original Windows XP CD, or a recovery CD from your computer's manufacturer, or a set of 6 Windows XP boot disks. If you do not have any of these, please visit our tutorial on creating Windows XP boot disks at www.schrockinnovations.com/makeboot1.php.
Once you have booted from your Windows XP CD or floppy disks, press the letter "R" at the first screen asking you for input. The computer will now ask you "Which Windows installation would you like to log onto." Each profile is represented with a number. Press the number associated with your profile (usually the number 1) and press enter. Now you will be prompted to 'Type in the Administrator Password." Enter your password and press enter (if you do not have a password to log into Windows, simply press enter).
After you enter your password (or simply press enter) you should be at a prompt that reads "C:/windows". Type the commands below to navigate to your Windows/System32/Config directory and replace the appropriate file:
  1. cd system32
  2. cd config
  3. ren system system.old
  4. cd .. (note the space after cd it is important)
  5. cd .. (note the space after cd it is important)
  6. cd repair
  7. copy system c:\windows\system32\config
If you were not able to log into your Windows profile in the recovery console, or if you were not able to navigate to the windows/system32/config directory, this likely means that the directory is gone. We have seen multiple reports of this occurring, and there is no discernible pattern that would indicate what is causing this problem at this time. This directory contains information required by Windows to boot, as well as information about your installed programs and saved passwords. If you currently are receiving the error "Windows/System32/Config/System file missing or corrupt," there is nothing you can do to remedy this problem.

hi You need to get a Windows XP from someone and follow these instructions: Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM or \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE
1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD. 2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key 3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair. Typically this will be #1 4. Enter in the administrator password when requested 5. cd \windows\system32\config 6. Depending on which section was corrupted: ren software software.bad or ren system system.bad 7. Depending on which section was corrupted copy \windows\repair\system copy \windows\repair\software 8. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Compaq Presario 1700 PC Notebook Problem gives me a screen windows will not strat because file is corrupted or missing file is \windows\system32\config\system

Is this XP?
Do you have the XP cd or the recovery cd's. This needs to be fixed by performing a Windows repair.
missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system"means that the OS,XP, is missing an essential file to run.
Or it could mean that your hard drive is failing. Is the hard drive noisey?

Missing or corrupt windows\system32\config\system file in XP

sciberteach:
Go in the BIOS, in the boot sequence make your DVD player as the 1st number device to boot from, restart your machine and do follow the article (you should know the admin password to go into the system drive):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545
Note: If you are too overwhelmed then your Product recovery DVD will give you your original OS and all settings back.
Good luck!
