Question about Garmin nuvi 350 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

The screen seems to be displaying only 1/2 the normal vertical lines of scan. Color intensity is weakened and whitened. Initially responded to squeezing perimeter of screen front to back. Screen would become OK, but then shorty return to poor quality if bumped. First occurance was at start up after being off for a month or so. Is there a grease/cream around the edge of the screen that could have dried up that should aid conductivity of picture signal? No physical damage obvious, any ideas?

Your touchscreen & glass is probably OK. It's just a flakey LCD display below it. I usually don't find disconnected cables inside unless the unit has been dropped.

As for the garbled audio, we can often repair mulitiple issues at lower expense since the unit is already open.

    Best wishes,

Thanks for your response concerning my nuvi 350.

I can't see any cracks in the screen and didn't think any of the bumps it had endured were very severe. The fact that the screen display was so consistant from side to side made me think there was some degradation of the signal connection. Your immediate diagnosis of a cracked screen surprised me but reading the pages of descriptions has convinced me you're correct. It also has the garbled / missing speach problem I read about so even though I had continued to be able to use it, it has multible problems. The cost of a newer unit on sale is near the price of repairing this one so I will retire the 350.

Thank you again for helping solve my problem.

    Sincerely,

    Roy

This is either caused by an intermittent LCD display or the lock down flap for the LCD is not putting enough pressure on the LCD flex cable to mate eith the board connector.

It sounds like a power surge has damaged the color controller and scan line section of the circuit board. The cost to repair is more then the replacement cost. Next time use a UPS for protection (battery back up for computer and electronics). Regards DaytonComputerDoctor@hotmail.com

Vertical scan lines

It sounds that there is a loose contact to some connection wires, the flat wires that comes in, and go out the T'Con board. Re-seat all the flat cables and check. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/ Check this link too. It has screen shots to different faulty displays. Pull up older posts and compare with these images to your TVs screen, and make confirm. Remember, vertical lines can be due to a faulty LCD display screen too.

Vertical strip of flashing horizontal lines on Acer Aspire 7551G screen

More than likely it's the lcd screen and will have to be replaced. I could be the video card, but most likely the lcd screen especially when you can put pressure on the screen and cause changes. To isolate the problem try connecting another monitor to the computer. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and connect it to the laptop. If the Borrowed monitor displays ok, then the problem is with your lcd screen and the video card is ok. If the Borrowed monitor displays the same as your lcd screen then the problem is with your video card inside the computer.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

Once you narrow it down to the lcd screen as being the problem you might try taking the lcd screen apart to reseat the lcd cable on the back at the top of the lcd. Just unplug it and plug it back into the connector. You can also try doing the same where the lcd cable plugs into the motherboard. Just pull it out and put it back.

CRT Monitor Displays only a thin bright horizontal line

Vertical IC loose connection. Best is to reflux it or resolder. It is in internal circuitry inside the monitor commonly an upside single line IC.

And its a minor repair only. But I recommend it to be serviced by a qualified technician. Inside it are plenty of nasty voltages. It might caught you.

The vertical height driver that controls the height of your picture has weakened and needs to be adjusted. If you are somewhat handy you can do this yourself. It requires that you gain access to back of the set & remove the cover. Once removed, locate the vertical height & centering adjustments. Sometimes they are located on the main board & other times are located on the color gun driver circuit board that is plugged into the end of the picture tube.

Respond to this post if you need additional assistance. Good luck!

Blue Vertical Line

It is sounding like when the laptop is turned on and heats up a bit, the line appears? Sounds like one of the panels is going bad or atleast has developed a problem. below are some tricks you can try to lessen the annoyance of the line. Dual-Scan STN displays are composed of 2 panels behind a single protective panel or screen. Because you are looking through the protective screen the display appears to be one large panel even though it is not. There is a physical separation line (gap) at the point where the two panels meet. When the computer is on and being viewed it is not unusual to see the visible separation line with the Dual-Scan STN displays. The line, actually the fine gap between the display panels, appears because the color and light pixels cannot run along the very outside edges of the panels. This line (gap) between the panels can be seen as a fine gray line and is most noticeable when viewing on a screen with a white or light background. Note the line may not be as noticeable when the screen is displaying certain colors or darker backgrounds. SUGGESTIONS: It is not possible to completely eliminate the line but there are some things you can try to reduce it's visibility. 1) Lower the display brightness/contrast. The brighter the backlight the more noticeable the line. 2) Use Wallpapers and Screen savers that use darker colors. 3) In the Control Panel/Display applet under appearance try different combinations of color schemes for your Window and Background choice Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
