Hello, I got a Scotts lawn mower, model # 229630x8a, that won't start. I replaced the spark plug, air filter and the fuel line with a see through one. When I prime it, i can see that there isn't any gasoline going through the fuel line. I then tested starting the engine successfully by spraying engine start oil, however, it stop after a few seconds. Please help. thank you.

    Hi,

I removed the carb. and cleaned with it carb cleaner and cleared put it back, now when i prime it, it's leaking gas from the little pan by where the nut is. After unscrewing the nut under the pan, i see the little plaster ring that goes in between the nut and the pan is broken. Looks like i need a replacement. Know where i can get parts? do i need a new carb or carb repair kit? thank you.

  • zichau Jun 23, 2009

thanks for the information, but i made one using the top of a plaster container and seems to work just fine, its not leaking anymore. I am now able to prime it and the mower starts but then immediated stops. no clue to why. is the mower not getting any fuel? could be the the floater is working? thanks.

i see holes3 on the nut, 2 on the botton, the tiny one on the top, no sure if the one iside the nut counts, if it does, it'll be 4. they were all blocked. i used a paper clip to clear the obstraction and then air sprayed it. all cleaned, i can see light through the holes.

Are you going to attempt to repair this carb yourself? It will involve removal of the carb, throttle and governor linkage and disassembly of the carb itself and buying some parts. Let me know. Dwain

Unfortunately, the mower model number doesn't provide any information about the engine because the mower was made by Murray and the engine was made by Briggs (probably).. Could you please post the model number stamped on the starter housing on the engine.

I think you're refering to the gasket for the nut/jet that holds the bowl on. That gasket should be availabe at any lawnmower repair shop. Tecumseh part # 27110A

Usually on one of those Tecumseh engines, it's the

bowl nut which is really the main jet. Make sure the holes are clear. There is probably one very small hole at the TOP of the threads. It''s hard to see, but it won't run if it's not open too. Check that out and let me know.

A paperclip won't fit the tiny hole at the top of the threads. Find something smaller. It does haqve to be open or it won't run.

your fuel pump bolted on left side of engine hoses are contected to engine and carb make sure they are secured and check your fuel filter maybe plugged or a pinched hose from gas tank look around

Mower won't start spark plug turns black

Black carbon fouling on the plug is a sign of the engine running too rich, start by replacing the air filter and plug and try again.

Scotts by john deere riding mower - 220 hours, 17.5 HP, 42" cut, Briggs & stratton engine -- New Strarter, new battery, good fuel... will turn over but engine will slow down then stop, will not...

Very high likelihood you have fuel line problems. Disconnect primary fuel line from bottom of fuel filter and blow compressed air back up the fuel line to the gas tank. This will clear the line of any trash. Reconnect fuel line to filter. Then remove spark plug and spray a couple of sprays of WD-40 into the cylinder.. Re-install spark plug and then restart. WD-4- will act as a starter fuel and will start the engine for enough rounds to get fuel pump to working to normal run.. Good luck.

Riding mower having problems starting then runs roughly

I would bet you have a fuel problem. Either the carb is clogged and dirty or needs adjustment. Try opening the screw on the bottom of the carbuerator about a half turn see if that improves it. Also check the air filter and clean it.
