What version of Customizer are you using?

To answer your question without knowing *all* of the specifics, yes, you can use your S&S PC on computers running XP. You will need, however, a serial-to-USB adapter. You can pick one up at Best Buy for about $30 or you can take your chances at eBay for about $15 (with shipping). I, myself, bought mine at eBay and got a great deal.

Once you've hooked up (and installed the software for) the adapter and your S&S PC, you need to tell Customizer which COM port to use. To do this, open Customizer (either EasyEdit or EasyImport) and click the "ScanCard" menu item. Choose "Communication Settings" in the drop-down menu and then choose "COM4" in the "Channel" drop-down menu. You may need to play with the "Baud rate" to get the best results.

From there, Customizer will be able to speak to your Scan N Sew and vice versa!! :)

If there's anything I can clarify, please let me know!! :)

I have bought a serial adaptor to connect my scan and sew to my laptop but I it keeps saying it can't find the com port. How do I get to to recognise the adapter?

Depending on the age of your computer, the COM port may not be connected or enabled.

When you start your computer, look for the command (usually DEL) to enter the BIOS.

Don't change anything but carefully search through the pages - the mouse doesn't work so you will need to use the cursor keys to move around the options.

You may find that the COM ports COM1 and COM2 are disabled in BIOS.

Selecting one of them and pressing the <RETURN> key should allow you to change the settings. Some times you just have to press the + and - buttons or the <PAGE UP> or <PAGE DOWN> buttons to enable or disable these features.

Pressing F10 on the upper row of keys should allow you to save the new settings.

You might also consider using a USB to Serial adaptor which save you a lot of trouble if you are not familiar with the BIOS system. The adaptor automatically sets itself up to communicate with the external device, in your case the scan and sew.

Hope this is of some help to you.

My Bernina Artista 180E no longer works with updated Windows. Is it possible to upgrade so that I can still use my 180E and not have to buy another machine?

Just use the free download software from Bernina called Artlink. I used it along with a USB to Serial converter cable to connect to the machine. Works wonderfully. Allows me to still use my old Artista designer software if I want to on an older machine and then when I want to actually transfer the designs I use the laptop with the USB cable.

Trying to connect a USB to the serial port of a Bernina Sewing Machine (Bernina 170). Has been working for a couple of years and has stopped all of a sudden. Does not work on and XP PC, Vista or win 7....

The Dynex adapter does not have any numbers on it. It was the one that is only about a foot in length and has a square center piece that houses the conversion electronics. Standard 9 pin RS-232 male plug on one end and the standard USB plug on the other end. I purchased it within the last month at BestBuy here in Austin TX.

My Janome customizer 2000 will not write to the scan card. It says that it will not recognize the serial port.

Hi, I have the same problem with mine. Janome have not been very helpful. I didn't know if it was the card or the card reader/writer. I have a Janome CX500. Have you solved any of the problems?

I replaced my USB/Serial RS232 port adapter with a genuine RS232 serial port on the PC. THis solved the problem. Further reasearch on the net indicated that USB to RS232 - serial port converters do often have problems. I previously had not had a problem running on Windows XP and this is what alerted me to the possibility of the USB/RS232 port adapter as a possible reason for the "new" problem.

Connection problem with computer to sewing machine and reader/writer

Hello,
It is not true that the 180 is not compatible with new software.
I'm owning a artista 180 from 2002 and just installed the software designer V5+ on a laptop with windows vista.
The only problem was that there was no serial port on the laptop, now I have a new cable with USB ans serial output and the software works very well !!
When you contact Bernina you will get the same answer.

call the people who made your computer (hp, dell) and ask for a down grade to XP and that will solve most all your problems that you will have with vista. vista has built in things that you will not be able to run alot of your programs on.
