Question about Brother HL 5140 Laser Printer
Take the paper tray out, tilt the print backwards. Under the printer at the front you will see what looks like black hook. This is a paper sensor and should move easily, completely freely. Sometimes this can dislodge and become ridged. Check this. Of course remember to clean the paper pick up roller and pad.

I'd guess that the machine is unable to pick up the paper so goes into jam mode, paper feed roller is worn, needs screwdrivers and parts.
Here is PARTS also needs little japanesse type fingers, gentleness, then a few bits come off from left side, spring, solenoid, and a couple of gears then tray out, 6 screws release base, few more bits and your done.
You should feed ok from bypass tray still and can have a dodgy attempt at fix by wiping paper feed roller(3cm rubber funny shaped roller sits front centre under with tray out) with something to clean it free of paper dust. ie metho, water.
