Every time you turn on your printer, it goes through a print head cleaning routine and the print head nozzles flush all the inks into the cleaning pads. This is why the inks are levels are dropping even though you have not printed anything.
The black print head is clogged. The reason why the black is clogged and not the photo black or any colors is that the black is pigment ink and the photo black and colors are dye based ink. The pigment ink is a particulate formulation that binds up when water is evaporated out of the ink. You need to buy a new print head the fix the problem. You can buy a new print head for $75 from precision roller.com.
You just have to clean the printer head or change it.
Happend to me and solved it:
Open the top the way you use to change an ink cartrige...Unplug the power cord.. the ink tray will stay accessible.
Save your ink in some plastic wrap.
Just where you pull the ink cartriges is the head. Lift the little arm on right top of the assembly and pull toward you the black plastic kind of container..(for ink cartriges)..
that is where the head is attached. DO NOT FORCE anything..it should come easily.
At first place in warm clear water..use rubber gloves..often change water. When it looks quite clean..it is not. Unscrew the two littles screws holding the flat ribbon tip where the ink should go out..Beware...lift it gently..
underneat there is a small rubber part..just lift the end covering the black ink exit...Now pour all this in warm water mixed with Windex for some time and change the water till it comes quite clear. Now blow air from a compressed air can in the black ink canal..you will be surprise to see the amount of plugged ink coming out from there.Rince, dry with compressed air, screw back parts, place everything back and try an head alingment test to see your Black here again..
the problem is very simple the magenta ink the cartridge is over or the head is been blocked from where the magenta ink comes out,
because red colour requires ---yellow plus magenta(pink)----to make it red.and ----dark yellow plus magenta(pink) -------- for brown colour.
Have you tried taking the print head out and cleaning all of the gummed up ink out of it. We had our black just quit on us and were just printing pale copy. There was an unbelievable build up on the print head. Another thread about the black not printing any more has a lot of stuff on this.
